Cheap high stall converter a340e (3vz) vs a340f (5vz)
Looking for a higher stall torque converter I found that the a340e that goes behind the 3.0 3vze is a 2800 stall to help combat the extra power loss from the hydraulic transfer case. This is also the reason that trans overheats so often. So, the question, is (and I'm sure I know the answer) are there differences in the converters so much that I can't use the torque converter from the 3.0 automatic? IPT will build me one for $500, Great Converters will reman one with a 2,500 stall for $275 plus shipping. Just examining all my options.

Got my answer from Great Converters in TX. The spline count is different and possibly the bolt pattern. IPT says they can get 2,800-3,000 out of a converter, but Great Converters says this is impossible. I'm not sure if they're talking about flash or brake stalling. Anyhow, going to remove my trans this week and have it sent to Great Converters. First stop, Harbor Freight for a trans jack.

The harbor freight trans jack is BARELY works, if at all possible use something better.
Like I said in the email they both could be right since it is so hard to say what the stall of a converter it after the fact without proper testing equipment.
Mine would stall anywhere from 2600 to 3200rpm depending on how hard I tried.
Mine was done at IPT since I did not know about great converters at the time. Not saying they are who you should use, just saying they did it. A converter is not magic so either shop should be able to do the same thing. My guess is that they are talking about a different type of stall point.

Great Converter simply resets the stall and welds it back up if everything is in good shape. IPT replaces some stuff, thus the difference in price. Actually a 2,500 flash stall that will brake stall to 3,000 or so sounds just about perfect. On stock stall I can get 2psi and push through to 2,500rpm. So a stall of 2,500 should push through above 3k especially making more boost hopefully 6-8+psi at launch. Only going to be brake stalling it at the track anyway. Thanks TA

Yeah, the upgraded lockup is nice from IPT if you plan on towing as the stall converter will run a lot hotter when towing with the overdrive off so I would leave it on after the upgrade. Stays nice and cool that way and never had a problem with it slipping.
