Unhappy Sometimes Revos and locking diff don't matter (pics)

In an attempt to move my 4Runner out of the way of construction on our garage I pulled down an access road below the house. Needless to say the road was VERY soft and despite repeated attempts, I could't get the vehicle free .

I ended up calling a guy with a track digger to bail me out. $100, but I didn't damage the car. Still, I was totally bummed out about the Revos and the locking diff. not helping. Any thoughts about what I could have done (besides not parking on the road )?

Learned that the hard way. In fact, they filled up with mud and froze overnight. Was about as smooth as a bowling ball the next morning.

I swear lately I have been thinking about M/T's. i love the Revos, but...You nailed it on this one. Great AT tire. With the wifey having the SR5 w/ 265/75 Revos, I think it is time for something more aggresive. all this rain and SE mud=time for a change

If only I could afford four sets of rims and tires.
1. Michelin LTX MS - for highway trips
2. Nokians - for winter
3. Revos - to look cool
4. MTs - for mud

One and ONLY ONE tire for my Runner... MT/R. Mud, Snow, Rain, Rocks, Ice, Dirt, Sand... whatever - they're the BEST all around tire that I've ever found for any serious offroading and still being a DD. There won't be another tire on there unless they discontinue them. Can be a touch noisy on the road after they wear down, but they wear like steel. I have 32k on these... Still 5/16" (actually just shy of 11/32") of tread left. How much did your Revo's START with??? The Revo's have 17/32" of tread on a 285/75-16 when BRAND NEW... My spare that has right at 13k on it and it has just over 16/32" left...

In comparison, my 285/75-16 MT/R's started with 19/32" of tread. That's right at 8/32" or 1/4" of wear overall. Not bad for about 32k miles and still retaining more than HALF the tread...

They still have a ton of usable miles in them, but I'd rather have newer tread and have to change them out more often than to just wear them down to nothing. I'm going to replace them soon and put these up for sale. I've already got two people in line for them at $300 + shipping...

I can't afford 4 sets of wheels and tires either, so I have one good set...

1. MT/R's - for highway trips
2. MT/R's - for winter snow/ice
3. MT/R's - to look cool
4. MT/R's - for mud
5. MT/R's - for rocks
6. MT/R's - for sand
7. MT/R's - for anything else i'll throw at them...

To get unstuck out of that situation, you probally would have been better off to have just backed up some and dropped both rear tires off the ledge. That way you could more evenly distribute the weight - especially on the rear axle that was locked. Do yourself a favor and go out and buy a $30 come-a-long and a $40-$50 30' tow strap. You could have hand-winched yourself out of that in about 20 or 30 minutes and you'd be out less money and have the recovery gear for the next time you got stuck...

The only time you NEED a mud tire is in the mud. The only thing that WORKS in the mud is a mud tire. Also, mud requires wheel speed. You gotta turn 'em fast enough to fling off the goo to clear the treads for the next bite into the mud.

Yeah, slippery stuff like that where you are stuck is like ice. No way it would climb right up that slope the direction the wheels are pointed in the slick stuff. You could have tried sidehilling it down the road farther. to a place where it wasn't as steep a climb out. Not fun. Tire chains on the back or even the fronts would have probably pulled it right out. Friend with truck would have pulled you out for < $100. Mud tires and just nailing the throttle might have worked too.

285/75-16 Load Range D Goodyear Wrangler MT/R's

$174 + shipping each from http://www.discounttiredirect.com or http://www.tirerack.com and $183 + tax each at your local sam's club...

When new, they're a touch noisier than an agressive AT. i went from Nitto Terra Grapplers in 265/75 to some Bridgestone Dueler MT's in 265/75 to these in 285/75. They are slightly louder than the Nittos and MUCH quieter than the Bridgestones. Now that they're wearing down some, they are getting a little louder than they were, but still VERY tolerable.

thats pricier than the revo and the bfg, but i love 'em!

i actually think ill end up going with those.. they look great and from the reviews ive read so far, apparently they perform great as well.

thanks for the heads up... and sorry for the hijack!

edit: im gonna go for 265/75s for them though.. so i think they should be cheaper per tire.

Yow,$174+ shipping? Discount will hook me up for $190 a tire mounted and balanced for those MTRs so if you have a Discount Tire then save yourself alot of money.
$822.69 out the door and maybe I'll consider these since they do look like a mean tire but they are $200 more than the Revos and I just might make use of the 50k warranty since I am a bit hard on tires...........or do you think one could see at least 40k out of the MTRs? Are they decent in the rain at highway speeds (70mph) cause the BFG A/Ts are scary enough.
I'm also considering another set of Yok Geolandars since I had good experience with those on my '97 on road and off.

Man,I hate decisions like this.

I 2nd the come along. You should be able to find them at any hardware store generally starting at 20$ (for a 2k lb) and heading up from there.

Could even have bought yourself a snatch block and cable (along with the hand winch) and been under the 100$ tab.

But...you did get yourself out.

they ARE badass, not just LOOK badass.

VERY good in the rain, snow, sand, highway, etc...

Combined w/ the Tundra TRD and Downey suspension, it still rides VERY nice on the road.

I have 32k miles on them and they STILL have more than 1/2 the original tread left. I've used about 8/32" of the original 19/32" of tread. I keep my alignment in check and CROSS ROTATE (changes the rotaional direction) them about every 5k miles. They wear like steel and grip like nothing else. If you can put up with a little road noise from them, then they are the way to go for a very good all-around tire. I'll end up with about 38k on these by mid-May (when I'll probally replace them) and they'll have at least 5/16" of tread left - right at the half-way point...

Also, don't think you can get a heavy MT or MT/R and NOT have them road-force balanced and be happy. Don't pay for a regular balance. You'll need to have them Road-Force balanced on a Hunter 9700 macnine. When you do that, it will cost about $80-$90 for the balance alone, but you'll only balance them once - ever. Mine have been balanced once and are still glass smooth - smoother than LSUMatt's new Michelins that he has on his 2WD. The RF Balance makes THAT much of a difference.

Hmmm.. I bought 5 35x12.50 with a steel rim for the spare for 1100 out the door with full road hazard warranty at Discount tires. They were running a 6months no interest. so I spread them out to 200 bucks a month.

I did try the come-a-long but by that point the truck was too far over the edge. I was REALLY worried about flipping the thing so I'm happy to be free
