I live in So Cal and I go up to big bear a lot. I've used both and I reccomend using the Z cables or whatever they're called. Even when it snows, it doesn't really accumulate and the traffic going up that pass stays pretty slow. The chains were load and the ride was really annoying. The cables are also easier to put on. The faster you can put them on, the sooner you can get up to the mountain. They are more than adequate for that drive up.

I don't know how effective that thing will be once all the holes are packed in with snow and ice.

Anyone run chains or cables on all four tires? Overkill maybe? Would they even clear the upper a-arms?

According to my owners manual running chains on the front wheels is a no no. I would hate for those chains to get loose and tear up my steering/suspension components. :pat:

Hey Nolan,
I have not used chains on my 4runner but I think I just saw you yesterday and never knew it was you. This is Allan and I was with you guys last night with my wife celebrating a birthday and engagement. I never knew it was you.

I hit up the same mountains as you (plus mt high but you never need chains there), and I also have 2wd, and I use the Z-cables. I've never had a problem with them coming loose, and they go on quick. The ride isn't too bad with them on either, since the tire is always on at least part of the zig-zag pattern, so the vibration isn't too bad, just a little bit louder.

Haha that is me (Cynthia's boyfriend)! That is so funny how those things happen, very small world. I am sure you are going to Christine's Party tonight, I will see you there and we can talk more. Oh, and if you are bored or looking for something to do tomorrow I am going to be swapping my rear 3rd member (i bought one already set up with 4.88's and an ARB locker).

I'm not trying to get into a debate. I'm just stating what my owners manual says about chains. Yours probaly reads the same.

i just said that because i saw this thread headed in the direction of "running chains in the front or back, which is better?"
