OKAY so last year my tranny started getting hot after a few hours of driving , and after draining , and adding fresh tranny fluid + lucas treatment it still did the same thing . after I added a tranny cooler , it still gets hot. but i linked the cooler to the radiator. so if I just by pass the rad. altogether it might be fine??? how big are you all's coolers , mine isnt huge , but it is big enough to fit between the grill and rad.

Some say the external trans cooler isnt good, because on very cold days the atf fluid needs the radiator to bring the fluid to a good operating temp. But this just means with a external cooler you should wait a extra few minutes before poping into drive on very cold days.

I paid about 60$ on amazon, came with everything needed. Though I think im going to run new 3/8 lines from the trans up to the cooler .

Well, for $57.95 I can't complain. I have 188K on the odo at this moment and the truck runs great. But, I am paranoid about the transmission. Living in SoCal, I won't have an issue running a separate cooler and heating the ATF to proper temps. Plus it makes it super easy to drain what comes out and swap some fresh ATF in there while I am doing it.

Thanks for this thread. Even though it sounds like the 96-98s are less at risk.

Happy to say that last year my freeze out plugs started leaking behind the tranny !!!!!
Whaaaaaaa??????????

Yup.........after doing research and realizing that green antifreeze is a death sentence for my runner's coolant system.....I added stop leak to the system
which stopped the leak dead and clogged up my radiator.
New 130.00 rad from the Yota forum approved source with new red approved
Toyota antifreeze.............All problems including possible milkshakes are solved!
Thanks!!

....my tranny died 1 year after the milkshake incident and 45 quarts....

it did not leave me stranded, the symptoms built slow enough, and shifting to 1
alway got me out of the poke
