LOL.. Well, here is my views on it.. I put mine on early this year..
It is there, and everyone knows it.. Br prepared to explain what it is every day and ou may just want to grab a photo deep in water to show people.. I have been using the 4Runner for work (as an Insurance Appraiser) and I have to explain what that damn thing is 12+ times a day.. DAILY I have been honked at in traffic to roll my window down and explain it, Get prepared to have people stare and turn around in their seats on the highway, they will point at it and anything else you can think of.. T

That being said.. It is great and gives you such a piece of mind. It works quite well, no power loss at all and a great little throaty sound with the windows open. Install is very easy, though a little scarey.. (If you would like to rent my hole saw to install e-mail me.. We can work out some details, I will let you rent it cheap if it is returned in the same shape.. It is very expensive to buy for a one time use)

Here is my write up

i noticed that you need to cut a hole into your airbox ... what if you have a k&n? do u just take the filter off and hook it straight to the snorkel? do the make one for trucks with k&n?

im going to call them and find out too coz i wanna see how much they are at a wholesale price.

this is one mod i wanna do... exactly for what you said... the comfort of not worring about sucking up water.

but there are other waterproofing things that need to be done too right? i remember seeing somewhere here a post on waterproofing your engine. like the distributor..etc.... anyone remember?

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't getting a snorkel kind of like doing a really long deckplate mod?

No, it's a really long elbow mod. My question is where does all the "rammed" rainwater go during normal driving?

okay - so there is a deckplate/elbow mod-type performance increase with a snorkel?

Or not since it has to pass through the fender anyway?

Theoretically a snorkel would provide small gains over stock due to the "ram" air and "cold" air effect. However, restrictive bends can hurt performance, so it really depends on design.

In other words, try sucking air through a kinked straw, it doesnt work too well. Design is key.

it would be like sucking air thru a bendy straw.. not a kinked one. coz if its kinked, then its bent to the point where there is little or no passage way for the air. the snorkle is not like that. its like a pipe bend, where the outside of the bend is longer than the inside. i think that the engine would have a little bit harder time sucking air thru a bended tube... but dont forget ,... as you drive air is getting pushed down the snorkle... so i dont think there is much loss if any in performance.

as for the rain water... im not sure. i kno you can twist the tip top of the snorkle around to face the other way... and also there are water outlets at the top of the snorkle to let water flow out.... not sure how it works though....

I was referring to a homemade or poorly designed snorkel as an example. I am sure most are professionally made.

Here's a semi-decent looking DYI job - it's for the wrong vehicle but still looks pretty good:

You have the FIPK, right? Well, if you remove the filter and connect it to the end of the tube, you'd be running NO FILTER.

The Safari's connect to a stock airbox. You'll need one to be able to connect a snorkel. Junkyards always have them. Like a dope, I tossed mine when I put the FIPK on mine.

I was condering repositioning and modding my FIPK so the air inlet was up where the cruise is beside the master cylinder. THat would raise the intake above most any water crossing I would attempt.

yeh i have k&n fipk. id have to tkae off the filter to add the snorkle... but i thought that the snorkle had a filter built in or something. guess not i guess i will have to get a stock air box and sell the whole k&n setup. hm... something for the future.

Thanks guys.. Ok, you can get around the air filter missing a little bit with Safari's addtional top air filter bowl.. I don't like the look of it myself.. (see Safari's website) As for the rain water, it is prety nicely designed, the intake tube that the head slips onto goes higher up inside that "scoop" than you would think. The head is also larger and has 4 drain slots around the base above the clamp. What happens is the rain hits the back of the scoop and runs down the scoop. However, seeing as the tube is higher than the drain holes around the base of the scoop it runs right out. Yes, a little will get on the bottom of the air cleaner, but probably no more than what gets in from the stock set up.

As for performance gains, I have felt no loss and there is a very slight boost about 3k and over 35mph.. (I think this is the "ram air" effect kicking in) Safari designs these to be able to flow more air than stock, so you do not get the restriction.

As for addtional water proofing. Do the front / rear diff breathers, both tranny & transfre case breaters, I took out my computer, sealed the housing really good with clear RTV and added a breather to the inside of the "A" pillar. I have sealed any little hole I could find, I silicolned my dist cap on and have added diealetric grease to all my connectors. (I plan on adding a breather to my dist cap one of these days. But I have the Toyota "cold weather pack" on my truck which has a rubber boot over the dist cap.)

BTW, BajaTaco.. The GPS more than rocks.. It freakin' Rules!!

If you really want to see how good it works,
Download this video

Here is a quote from Safari's web site
"Will installing a Safari snorkel increase the power output of my engine?"

"This depends in the standard air intake design of your vehicle. All Safari snorkels are designed to flow more cool fresh air than your engine could ever need and this may help the power output. However, the state of tune of your engine, at the time of fitting the Safari snorkel will determine the extent of any possible increase. "

This is a photo of how the head works

And here is a breakdown of how mine is attached.

I'm looking into getting one real soon, but for my 3rd gen, where did you guys buy yours? I called 4x4 connection, they said it would take about 2 weeks to get since they didn't have any, but they have the cheapest prices I have seen ($225+17shipping).

Anyone know how reliable they are?
