Question Skid Plate

Hello,

I have a new '02 SR5 (non-sport) and was thinking of putting on a front Skid Plate like the Sport editions have installed on them.

Does anyone have a picture of one? I was just curious as to how far back under the engine it goes?

Also are there any issues I should be aware of if I were to install it? Maintenance wise or any other?

I found them here: http://store.yahoo.com/romaniatoyota...skidplat4.html

Does that seem like a fair price, or can I do better?

Thanks!

That's a lot of bones for just a thin piece of metal.
If you want something a lot cheaper, and more durable, there are outfits that make this stuff.

Try Rockstomper
www.rockstomper.com

Budbuilt
http://www.budbuilt.com/

Not sure if either makes anything for the '02, but it's worth a try.
I know some 3rd gen owners are using the Rockstomper skids.
I believe Jeff the marmot is using their skids.
You can get a hold of him from the member list here for details.

Also Perf sells stuff too.

That is WAAAAY over priced. I have one installed on my 2000 SR5. Install is very easy as it bolts on underneath the front bumper right to the frame. The bolts are already there and are 17mm. The plate is mostly for show and doesn't go much further back from the bumper. Here is a link to a pic of my truck with them on and a link to Jay Marks Toyota in Texas. I payed somewhere around $50 for mine. If you have any other questions, please email me.

Hey Pfdaxe,

Nice looking ride, clean! Did you make the mesh grille for your 4Runner or did you purchase it somewhere?

skid plates are great! i think 4x4 tacomas come stock with them because i havnt seen many with out them.. i have skid plates on everything that is exposed on the bottom... and a couple of times already that have prevented some damage. but 500 bucks is a lot for some peices of metal... just go to a junk yard and find some off an old truck and tweak them around a bit to fit yours... unless you want nice looking show ones. hahaha whats the point of getting something nice that you are SUPPOSED to bang up???

My local dealers price for factory 2002 skid plate(Toyota calls it a "gravel guard") was $77. I believe I payed just under $50 from Jay Marks Toyota. Im not sure the part number as I didn't have it when I called them. I just told them what I was looking for and they knew what I was talking about.

As far as Jimmys question.....

The grill is home made from "gutter guard" you can buy at Home Depot. I cut it to fit with snips and attached with zip ties. Cost around a whopping $10 and looks great. I get alot of compliments about it. Grill Craft makes one just like it. But, they want around $100 for the grill and about the same for the valance part. I haven't found any billet grills that look good. I like keeping the original shell, but the only billets replace the whole thing.

ps...I just ordered a set of Altezza tails and a 2nd gen Supercharger to finish it off....pics to follow

Mark, look in our Tech section here too.
Jackson has an article on customizing the grille.

That is one SWEET Runner man. I work at Home Depot, I'm go into work here in about 30 min. I just might have to go pick me up a bit of that gutter gaurd. Also if you wouldn't mind. How much lift is under that Runner of yours and what kind(company) is it. Just curious for ideas w/ mine. Thanks.

Stump:

I installed a 2 1/2" Daystar lift. Then added 285/75/16 BFGs which gave me alittle more lift.

It probably does fit earlier 3rd gens.

Look on your frame and see if you have (2) 17mm bolts on each side. One set is located on the passenger side where the tow hook is mounted and the other set is on the drivers side. If you have these (2) sets of bolts then it should fit. The dealer states "2001 and up" but I have a 2000 and Im sure the 96+ has the same frame and bolts. The skid plate is not chrome but rather brushed aluminum.

Good luck

Thanks, I wanted to ask the same question. Now if it ever dires out some here in NC I might just go lay under my Runner and see if I have the bolts, then make a quick call out to the Toyota Dealership/Stealership(I love that one ).
