Should CEL flash at startup?

Should the CEL come on (flash briefly) at startup? 1995 3.0 4runner. A few of my other indicators do, but I have never seen the cel... I would think it should...Just curious.

I'm gonna jump the diagnostic connectors just to make sure the bulb is not burn out - I dont look forward to tearing the dash apart.

By the way - this sight is awesome! For a 4runner newbie like me , it has been a lifesaver!!

yes, it should come on and stay on until you start your engine. i had the same problem once, a previous owner had removed the bulb...

That's what it was - previous owner had removed the bulb. I tried to do the diagnostics check and it wouldn't come on. Pulled out the cluster and sure enough, no bulb. I had a spare bulb in my shop - plugged it in, and sure enough, I've got a functioning check engine light - Now I have two more problems, codes 52 (knock sensor and 7 (TPS).

Dood, I remember one of my neighbors bought a used car and took it in for service, and there was saw dust in the tranny.
It's supposed to be a "fix" for a slipping tranny if you want to get rid of the car and not pay to have it done properly.

EDIT: May have been done by the previous owner, or by the dealer, but aren't they supposed to check all that? It was on 2000 Honda.

My friend bought a brand new ford from a dealer, we went to install new cd player in the car, took the dash apart only to find no light bulb in the lo oil pressure socket. we robbed one from the fasten seatbelt light and fixed that one quick.
