I was searching for an old thread I saw about someones shifter hitting the 4X4 shifter when going into reverse. I cannot find it, so I am looking for your help either locating it or solving the problem.

I also have this problem in my 88 4Runner and would like to fix it while I have it all torn apart. When shifting into Reverse, the shifters will hit if the 4X4 shifter is in 2High.

The only fix that comes to mind is bending the shifter. Don't know if that is safe or smart. Should it be heated first? Is bending a poor solution? Is it hard on the tranny to apply that much torq? Can the shifters be turned (loosened or tightened more) so they angel a bit differently?

Does the tranny shifter move a lot side to side when its in gear? If so you might have a worn out plastic linkage piece, or it could just be loose screws that hold the pivit point to the top of the tranny. That's where to start looking anyway. See if you can lift up the boot and look at where the shifter goes into the top of the tranny.

 

Neither of the shifters are loose or have play in them. They both move what feels like correctly... shifting easily, smoothly, accurately and without slop. It almost looks like the only reason they hit is because of the angle in the shifting lever itself. Runner only has 71,000 miles and feels brand new

Can the shifting levers be spun on the same axis, as to change the direction of the bend away from each other?

I am having the same problem with my '92. The tranny shifter taps the transfercase shifter when I go into 5th aswell.

 

Sweet geezus. I bet after ten years it probably still hits.....
