Between 2.5K and 3K for normal driving. 5K for "sprited" driving. Mine doesn't pull much from 5K to redline, so I shift at or just above 5K when I am trying to smoke soccer mom's in Astro vans.

usually between 2500-3000...
I try and go lite on the gas to save $

Does anyone ever have their engine get rough in its peak powerband right around 3300-3500 or so?
The engine runs smooth until 3000, then is rough until 3800 or so, and then smooths out again -

Between 2.5k and 3k for normal driving. This seems to give the best combination of fuel economy and power. If I need some get up and go, or if I'm towing something, I'll let it get up to 4.5k or so.

Yes, but I would describe it more as a flat spot in the power band. Kind of annoying but I work around it.

Yeah, mine does that at 3/4 throttle when going up an on-ramp or something.

Peak HP is actually listed as being at 4800 RPM and peak TQ at 3600 RPM on the 4Runner 5VZ.

it feels like mine doesn't have any power under 3750, so I shift so that it goes in to gear around 3000, as to have some economy time, but then, ill pull it out to 5k. I've never redlined it, and my economy is fine, plus I actually keep up with most cars that way.

You shift at 2k overdrive?!?!?! Man, I tried doing that for a while...well.....for exactly 2 take-offs. I have to rev it out a lil more to get going. 3-3500k is what I do. And if I really want to move.....4k, but nothing higher than that. I can see trying to save gas by shifting soon, but if you're worried about killing the engine..don't. Your motor will run at 3,000+ all day long, no prob. In fact, it's more efficient that way. When you shift too early, it bogs down, and actually can get WORSE gas mileage. I'd say rev her out to at least 2500. Later!

Right around the 3k marker. 2k is to low and bogs down your engine and can actually cause damage. Why do you think all the pinging issues occur at high gear low rpm?

For normal driving. I usually shift at around 2500-3000 RPM's. It also depends on the gear too. When I'm in 1st shifting to second usually around 2700-3000. From 2nd to 3rd, usually around 2700-2900 and from 3rd to 4th usually around 2600-2700-ish unless I'm passing of which then I might go a bit higher. From 4th to 5th I can't recall b/c that happens on the highway and I don't drive on the highway enough to pay attention but it's probably around 2600-ish. If I'm looking for power then I might, and I mean might, see 3300-3800 RPM.

generally i agree most with coednaked. i shift higher at lower speeds and lower at higher, and if i'm trying to be gentle (ie engine really cold at 15° or such) i'll not go over 2500 for the first couple mins... but typically find that on the low side of oomph, and now even more with the new 33s on my stock 4.56.
