selling a non running vehicle
ok i live in CA.. and.... my friend has a vehicle for sale.... its an 82 toyota 4x4 pu with an 85 22r in it, for $1200.... well, it runs strong, but doesnt pass smog... its registered in an area where it isnt required about 3-4 hours away from me.... can he sell me the vehicle without it passing smog? i live in an area where we have the bar97 standars with the dyno test...... i am aware i cant register it as mine until it passes smog, and i cant have it on the street and it will need to be trailered or i just need to be careful and not get caught....

good Q? man.....can you call the DMV and get a straight answer?
In MO you could buy the truck, but just can't get plates w/o it passing or getting some sort of exemption.

'The Man' cannot prevent you from purchasing property (buying the truck and transferring the title). For all they know your going to strip it down and make a sand-rail out of it.
The only thing they can do is restrict what rolls on a public roadway, and they do that through licensing.

If it's registered Non-Op, then you can transfer title without a smog.. At least that's how i did it with my 84 Tercel Wagon. Of course you'll have to smog it if you want to drive it on the road ever again, But you already knew that...

Jim, had a thought while driving back from Virginia. Why not spring for the $20 or $30 to have a test done before you buy it. It could show that it's close, or miles away. Also, if you know which reading(s) are high that'll help troubleshoot why. I've seen a few posts in the maint section that discussed what causes specific readings to be high. Or maybe he's saying it won't pass due to missing equipment?

no he said it had a pretest done by a friend of his and he said it wouldnt pass... this was when he was looking @ bringing down to the bay area from where his parents live..... here they have the dyno test....
and its not 20-30 here for a smofg test... its regularly about $50 + $10 for certificate... if you get one of those coupon htings in the mail you can get it done for $40 + $10 for the cert

Even if you can green sticker it, you'd still have to tow it to wherever you want to wheel.

well, im going to buy it and fix whatever is wrong with it... if it does indeed get nailed for a gross polluter, there is a $500 grant the state might provide to help get it to pass... and since i really dont have a job right now, i will probably get it....
