my girlfriend, on the other hand, would have really appreciated it if there was more of a step. So all I do is try to park along curbs or tree planters in parking lots, which then makes the step down and up not so bad on her.
toyNG your sliders are nice! Are they custom or did you buy them somewhere?

You could add that to the "You know you drive a Toyota when..." thread. You know you drive a Toyota truck when you have to park next to a curb to load/unload your passengers.

Thanks, I like the sliders too. They are the Trail Gear sliders. I found them on ebay for $130 shipped, plus another $16 or so for the gusset plates. Welding them on was a pretty long process, since the legs also have to be cut and welded. They are HREW, which is not as strong ad DOM, but they are definitely ok for me, as I don't do much hardcore rockcrawling.

Ok cool, I've looked at the TG sliders also. I'm also really impressed with Shrockworks sliders, and they could double as a step up into the truck.

another brand to consider is Stubbs. I don't think I've heard anyone say anything bad about his sliders. http://www.stubbswelding.com/rocksliders.htm

This is a good idea depending on what kind of bedliner you use. There is the rough texture and smooth texture. Obviously, don't get the smooth on the sliders.

But I'm still with the grip tape over the liner. Grip tape will provide better traction than the bedliner.

Or I was thinking, maybe you can have a little flat platform welded to the top of the slider? Like some mesh grilling that's ~3 inches wide? Just brainstorming...

Yes I've looked at his also, they look very high quality! It really is a tough decision, lots of good choices out there. I would really like to weld them on (not myself, have a shop do it), but I'm worried about finding a good place that knows what their doing. Bolt ons would be 'easier', but even some bolt ons require drilling to fit. I'd rather just weld them on and be done with it.

You're right about the bedliner, I think Rhino lining is smoother than Line-X, or do I have that mixed up? And the smooth stuff wouldn't provide very sure grip in wet conditions, in fact it could be worse. I will check out some samples at the Line-X place and see if they can recommend something. The welded platform is a good idea, and I'm leaning more towards a slider (like Shrockworks) that sits a little further from the rocker panel so it can be used like a step.

U know what else is fun?

You can pull right up next to those "bad parkers" at the mall (on the passenger side) that take up 2 spots and make it so they cant open their door

LOL that's awesome! I've noticed around Christmas things get especially crazy in parking lots. The person in the huge Ford Explosion trying to squeeze in a compact only spot kind of thing. For the most part I try to park away from people to avoid all of that, but if I have to I know who will win if a car door hits a welded slider.

I would recommend going to a place that has done welding for 4wheeling purposes before. You want to make sure the welder knows how to weld them for what you are dong. Or better yet, try to find a fellow wheeler in your area who knows how to weld.

Bolt-on sliders do have the option of removing for a resale,repair/painting or any other reason you'd want them off.

I'd also rather have the slider have some give intead of possibly bending the frame but that's not likely to happen but it can.

That would be ideal, finding someone local.

Good points, I've thought about the resale thing. But honestly I don't see myself ever selling the Tacoma, if anything once it's paid off I will just keep it as a trail rig/Home Depot hauler. Then again, never say never!

I'm also not sure how comfortable I would be drilling into the frame to fit bolt ons.

Lots of people are saying grip tape comes off too easily but mine isn't even beginning to show wear after months...its holding up awesome!!! Think about it, on a nice skate board the grip tape doesn't just fall off lol get the 3m stuff and you'll be fine! I'll post up some pics tomorrow if I remember of my sliders with the grip tape....

And this is way off topic, but how do you "4 wheel" with two wheel drive lol no low gearing not to mention lack of front wheel drive (yes the locker helps but that doesn't help the front tire crawl over the rock or obstacle...) would make it interesting in the rocks wear you would need the sliders I'm not bashing the 2 wheel drive I'm just curious how well that works?

Yeah that would be awesome if you could post up some pics!

And to answer your question about wheeling a 2wd, I think what helps is......magic. I've never taken my truck on any sort of big rocks or gnarly mud, so honestly I don't know how well it would do. One of the places we go camping in Oklahoma has some really steep dirt roads with small/medium rocks here and there, and of course I can get through that stuff no problem. I have been reading up in the 'PreRunner' section over at TTORA and there are some good tips in there. I'm hoping that with enough ground clearance, some driver experience, and a rear locker I can go as far as I would want to. (i.e. not nearly as crazy as 4x4 stuff) I knew I wouldn't use a 4x4 to it's potential because my truck is on pavement most of the time, I just wanted something that could go further than a Subaru Outback offroad.

^ 89silver that looks like a great setup! And the grip tape seems to be holding up really well, you were right it's just like skateboard tape. I also think your half doors kick ass!

Here's a good thread about what a stock PreRunner is capable of. With a locker it's not too bad when the going gets tough, but a lot of guys swap in a 4x4 trans to go even further.

and another good thread
