Rusted out rear Axle Housing PICS
#41
Thanks. Awesome cover. My other option was to find an eight inch piece of pipe and weld up my own. This is my 5th Toy. I still have a '94 that I'm going to bring in to my shop and do a frame replacement. I had already cut out part of the frame several years ago and replaced it in the typical spot by the rear leaf springs. The frame is now beyond repair. Stuck a battery in it the other day after sitting for 6 months and it fired right up. I'm sure I'll be in touch as that project progresses.

98 4Runner Diff Cover Replacement
Go easy on me I am a new user. Finally actually created an account. Up until now I've used this site for info. Now I have a question.
Just replaced my 98 4runner rear differential housing cover with the BARNES4WD cover.
My question is how much gear oil to use with this new cover. It looks like originally it held 2.6 us quarts. I refilled it to this point with 4 quarts, which seems like a lot, but i still can't feel any oil on my finger when checking the level.
I called Barnes and they were understandably hesitant to give me an exact amount but agreed I should feel the oil on my finger when checking the level.
So bottom line has anyone installed one of these and have any idea how much oil it should take. I am just concerned with over filling it and blowing out the axle oil seals.
Thanks.

Hi Jesmit,
I filled mine to the 'feel with the finger' level like you would with the original cover. That's not an over fill level. The cover is a little larger and will take more gear lube. As long as the level is not above the original cover level you should be fine. One thing I didn't mention in my original post is that I replaced the breather with a new one which will keep your seals from blowing out. Hope this helps.
That is one heck of a project isn't it. I hope you like grinding.

My friend's '98 had a seeping rear cover. I had a spare 3rd gen axle housing from another project, so we spent an afternoon cutting both covers off, prepping his housing, and welding the 'new' one on. I enjoy welding, but that job was less than enjoyable.... Still leak free a year later.

Good job Andreas. Still leak free. Band aid fixes are ok for a short term while you get the right stuff around to do a permanent fix. It's only been a few months and mine is still leak free.
I enjoy welding too. All the prep work while still on the vehicle was less than enjoyable.
