Rust, an enemy of the 4 runner

I was under my runner today tinkering around with the emissions system when I noticed it...the whole underside of my car is pretty much rust. The body itself is in great condition glossy paint, no rust etc...the underside, a different story.

My main concern is the running boards, they are pretty much all rusted underneath, though very little rust has reached the surface at this point. I am curious to find out what the cost to replace the metal part of the running boards would be as I would like to do that prior to them rusting all the way through and possibly onto another part of the body.

Any recommendations on replacements?

I would maybe grind the rust out then spray rubberized undercoating on them. That's what I did on mine, I did my skid plates, frame, and transmission pan.

bad thing about a rubberized coating is, if water gets behind it (smack it off a rock) the water can't go anywhere so it rusts worse. honestly, i'd just rip them off, mine had holes right through, and i couldnt be bothered, lets your rockers breath, making less chance for rust, as for the undercarriage, i'd just take it to a rust place, they will clean it all off and spray it down, killing the rust.. do this annually and it should last you a long time.
