Cougar is right--that bearing is a unit bearing and doesnt have any play--Press the stuff together and BOOM--Bob's your Uncle.

Thats why i was looking for more detail from the guy above--was just trying to figure out if there was some WEIRD issue to look out for when replacing those little buddies.

Cheers Everybody--

I would post pictures but i have a hell of a time getting them on here....

Cheaper to build.

Less parts. One spindle, one hub, one bearing vs. Spindle, hub, two bearings, races, nuts, lock washers, axle lubricaters, etc. It also allowed them to use an uncaptured rotor setup, since brakes tend to be replaced more often than bearings. Made for less time needed to remove the rotors (10 seconds VS 30 mins and rebuilding the front end) to surface or replace them.

This is interesting I just changed the left front on my wife's 00' 4Runner 2 weeks ago along with the axle and it's making noise again. Of course I was a bit confused on the orientation of the lock ring for the ABS wheel and I wound up pressing the new bearing in-out like 4-5 times messing with it. I though it was odd that the lock ring and ABS ring spun loose on the spindle. But once the axle was installed sure enough it locks it tight. I also noticed a small dent in the face of the outer bearing the last time I pressed it back together and that likely did it in. When I buttoned it up and went for a test drive the same noise was still present, but barely. Now it's just as loud as it was before. Oddly enough inspecting the old bearing (it exploded taking the hub out) the rollers all appeared to be in good shape. Which is why I wound up putting in a new axle too, I didn't think it was the bearing making the noise after seeing it's guts. I'm going to swap the bearing again next week and I sure hope it's the source of the noise. Also installed both the original 202k mile bearing and the new one had no play in them. The bearing with the hub pressed in but without the axle installed does have some play in it. I've dealt with a number of these type of bearings on BMW's and on a few other 1st gen tacomas I have owned. Actually had to change both fronts on my 05 already and they are similar too.

Well, if you do it again and think you get it spot on let us know.

I guess you have to be very anal about putting them in?

Just had my right front bearing replaced at the stealership. Not $$$ pretty. $613 total, but that included popping out the upper BJ and replacing it with a new one. I talked with my local independent tech who pressed in my rears, and he told me to go to the dealer to have the work done since the fronts are a real PITA, even for him.

I actually saw the fluid from the bearing on my rim and tire twice since July, with the nice little whirring sound rrom the RF wheel area being the dead giveaway in these cool mornings. If only replacing the front bearings were as easy and cheap as the rears....

My 05 tacoma is a very similar setup except the bearing bolts to the spindle. But the hub still presses into it and it's a similar dual race bearing. On that I had massive bearing noise from the front end shortly after 70k. It sure sounded like it was the passenger side. So I pulled the passenger side apart and had a local shop press the old hub into the new bearing, then I put it all back together. This was before I bought my own press. Got it all back together and then noticed the driver's side was making noise too. At that point I was so pissed I just brought the whole truck to the shop and had them do the other side. It was in the middle of January and it was maybe 20 degrees in my garage. I'm at 102k on that one now and they are still quiet. I'm pretty sure I damaged the bearing (the dent in the outer race is evidence to that theory) with all my messing around with the ABS ring and taking it apart a few times. I'm hopeful the next one will be quiet. It's really no different than any other modern independent suspension FWD or RWD wheel bearing setup on other makes so there is really no reason it shouldn't work.

well that sounds good---the horror stories were starting to get to me.....i have my spindles out and etc but its like that seal in the front IFS differential Sans the extension housing--you have to get it just right or your can forget about it sealing properly.
