Rough idle on a '95 2.7L 4x4
New to the site...there's a lot of good info on here (Great Site).
Well I went and looked at a '95 2.7L Tacoma w/108Kmiles today and it had really bad idle. The owner told me he replaced the plugs and plug wires. I did a search on "rough idle" and found some things about problems with headgaskets on the V6's, but still unclear on any problems with the 2.7L.
I drove the truck around for a while and it didn't overheat, no smoke except for white smoke on startup/warming up. I didn't do a compression on the truck, so I don't know if it is loosing compression in any one cylinder.
The "check engine" light also stayed on. He said that there was a bad sensor...that would cost $250 to replace.
Just wanted to see if you guys could shed provide any known/common problems with the 2.7L's.
Any help is much appreciated. TIA

Not sure what sensor he was talking about, the guy just said a sensor was causing the check engine light to stay on.
Any idea on what would cause the extremely rough idle?

My 01 with the 2.7 has a really rough idle. It idles around 750 rpm's I think which are in spec by my haynes manual. The idle feels like when you let the clutch out on a manual tranny(I have an auto) and the engine is about to die. I've had people check it out and they just said the idle may be a little low but it's causing no harm and not to worry about it.
But I don't have the check engine light. take it autozone or advanced auto parts and they will pull the codes for free and tell you whats wrong.

You need to tell us what the code # is before we can help you.
There are countless things it could be but it would be foolish to speculate.
Take it to an Autozone or get an OBD reader to check it yourself.
They are about $40 at harbor freight.
....or nicer ones like mine are about $200.

Thanks for all the help! I haven't bought the truck yet, waiting to see if he accepts my offer and I wanted to make sure it's nothing major. I'll take it to autozone and ask them if I end up buying it.
