Post Roof Racks

On my LLLLLLLOOOOONNNNNNGGGG list of items to get for my runner.... is a roof rack..... now which does everyone suggest, I was looking at con-ferr and then at Garvin Industries... they both look similar, and I was just going to put it on top of my factory rack... anyone have opinions?

Both are good. Personally, I think the Con-Ferrs look the best. They also have 8 support legs as opposed to 4 which the Garvin one has. I've never actually seen one up close to know exactly how it might compare to the Wilderness.

Surco is what most run due to the price point, but the Wilderness one is substantially more solid and stronger. All in all, it comes down to your preference and how much you want to pay.

I assume you are talking about safari baskets, and not roof rack systems. As for safari baskets, I have a surco, as do many other people on the board. It is a relatively inexpensive option, good for light duty use (mounting lights too, carrying a spare tire). If you want more than a light duty rack, then the Wilderness and Con-fer are good options. My Surco is starting to fall appart after just 1 year of use. Granted, I used it pretty hard, and in ways not intended by Surco. The joints are starting to loosen and the thing rattles like crazy. I took it down about a month ago. I will continue to use it, but only on 4wheeling trips - it gets removed for day to day driving.

Damn Nice!

Both are nice... its nice to see things on 4runners with scoops, gives me a better idea... for some strange reason i just can't see not having the scoop....

Anyways... Darren.. I see how you do your wiring.. I too plan on having lighting on my rack.... I might have to bug you more for specific tips... I sure as hell dont want to drill holes... does your door ever leak?

Well, it didn't use to. Now, my passenger side is leaking pretty good. I've siliconed one stretch, but no change as we had another rain yesterday. I'm going to have to try it one more time all over the place up there. I was in a 1 or 2 downpours last year and had no problems at all.

I really can't figure it out because the wires that are running along up there fit right in and there is plenty of room. It's not like they are making the rubber seal bulge out any. The driver's side is fine.

Definitely don't drill holes as it isn't necessary. There have been a couple posts how others have wired their's as well. Yeah, if you have any other questions let me know.

After 1 year (which included a really nasty winter), I still have no leaking. Just another wiring option for ya - details are on my site.
