Roof basket for 2000 4runner?
#1
I have been looking for a good roof basket for my 2000 4runner. I have the factory rails, which are ok but pretty high 2 3/4" off the top. I have been thinking about using a lower rail somehow.
I like and have been looking at the Go Rhino, but they are 6" high. I kind of like the Curt basket, which is 4" and makes more sense to me as far as usability and aerodynamics. I have 3 kids and it is becoming a necessity, even with a hitch carrier........at least for camping trips during the summer. Elk and Deer hunting would benefit as well.
Any ideas are welcome. I just don't want to end up with a rack that is noisy and cuts down my mpg excessively. I don't really want to take it off much. As always I do not want to spend a ton of money. I love the toyota racks, but they are way too expensive for me. Any ideas that have worked for folks?
Thanks
Justin

Checkout Robb's rack that he built, sits nice and low : https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f199...5/index34.html

Habenero has messed with her roof system to make it better. Yakima sells an off the shelf basket too. You are somewhat limited by the 250# roof limit.
Your imagination is really your only limit. Cut down factory bars and use them just as anchors and build your own box. Be sure to put some sort of deflector in front otherwise you’ll get horrible wind noise and terrible mileage.

Thanks. I was reading last night about using unistrut on my 2000 4runner (I think I will use black). Attached straight to the rails I bet you can get more weight up there. My rails will slightly bend when I place a lot of weight up there, but weight directly on the rails should be stronger. I can bolt the unistrut down to the rails and then use u-bolts or something to attach the rack so that it would be lower/closer to the roof. My factory racks are 3+" high, but I can cut down a couple of inches by using the unsistrut. I like the Curt 4" racks, but I would rather have them a bit bigger.... round 50-58" long and about 40" wide. We shall see, I'm getting closer!
