Replace with 22re or 22rte??

Just bought an 86 4Runner. But it needs a new engine. Should I go turbo or not?

Pros and Cons would be appreciated. (And cost would be roughly the same.)

Thanks in advance.

I vote Not.
First, where do figure to get a 22RET engine? There weren't many and the vast majority of them died years ago. Turbo parts are few and far between.

Do a few mods to the 22RE and you'll have a willing toquey little motor that will last a long long time.

it's not that much more work to turn a 22RE into a 22RTE, but to do it right you're going to have to shell out some cash either way. the stock turbo toyota used is an expensive piece of junk.

if you want turbo, check this site: http://www.well.com/~mosk/

to do it right, you've got some work ahead of you...if you don't mind dropping a couple grand, you can also go for LC engineering's supercharger setup

For the couple of grand it's going to cost you for the weak powered 22RET swap, you'd be better off doing the Supra 7M-GTE swap. The power potential of the Supra engine will be significantly better. Just think about it this way, 230hp stock compared to 135hp stock.

In fact, I'm willing to bet that the Supra engine will be less expensive than doing a 22RET swap. You can find lots of used 7M-GTE engines floating around compared to relatively rare 22RET engine.

If you just desire the 22RET for the rarity aspect, then try getting a compete 22RET truck. It'll probably be cheaper in the long run. I used to see them pop up in the truck-trader every once in the while.

Thanks for you input. I was debating a supra swap also, but wanted to know my options.

Anyone here do the Supra swap? How much will that cost and how more work would it be compared to a 22re?

Nevermind.. after doing more research.. I think I'm just going to get a remanufactured 22re and then add some mods. Thanks again.
