I would like to install some airhorns onto my truck that are hooked to the factory horn. First I need to get my factory horn working properly. I beleive that the problem is a faulty button behind the steering wheel. I don't know how to access it. Do I need a special tool? Is there a screw or bolt that I am just not seeing? Please help. My truck is a 1996 Tacoma 2.7 liter automatic w/airbag in steering wheel.

 

You'll want to pick up a manual from your local auto supply shop - Haynes manuals are pretty good. I don't think it's advisable to mess with the airbag though... Good luck with that.

 

i would pay the dealer and not mess around with air bag things, if it blows you out way more than paying the dealer to fix your horn

Just for the record - are you *confident* the fault lies in the horn button (within the 'combination switch' assembly)?

Have you ruled out a wiring fault, a faulty horn relay, and a faulty horn unit?

Seems to me those would be far more likely candidates for the source of the problem... Just checking....

 

I am trying to avoid having to pay for the dealer or any extra manuals. I bought a Chiltons for it and it got ruined by mud. I am fairly confident that it is the switch behind the airbag on the steering wheel, because the horn will sound only if I press really hard on it. It is acting as if the switch is bent. If anyone has any further info please let me know. Thanks
