Question relplace muffler on 96 4runner?

Hi all,

I read the archives, but I still have some questions.

So I drive 96 4runner (100K miles) it's pretty rusted -
I live in Toronto, Canada.
Looks like there's hole in the muffler and it's time to think
about replacement.
I don't want to spent too much and I don't want noise.

I have following options.
1. Install stock Toyota muffler, which can be bolted in place
of the old one. I will keep the tailpipe in this case.

2. Install Walker muffler and tailpipe (1 piece) - bolted, but I hear it's crap and it'll rust in 1 year.

3. Borlo - too expensive.

4. Other brands which will require custom job, say Dynomax.
But a friend tells me welding won't hold long in this areas.
Another thing I have against welding - if I need to fix something else there, say catalitic or another muffler -
it's welding again, there won't be flanges to bold things like there's now.

So far I will try to patch the hole, but I need to decide what to do when the time comes.

If anyone read that far - what do you guys think about rustcheck?
or everybosy is from the south :-) ?

Leon

I'd either go OEM toyota or a stainless magnaflow.

Rustcheck is pretty good......you might try POR 15 if your underside is very rusty to keep it from spreading.

I just did the same on my 96. I bought a Bosal exhaust online for $125 with free shipping. My old exhaust was like swiss cheese and the truck was pretty loud. It sounds much better now.

i ended up just getting a stock toyota replacement for my 94 pickup and bolting it on.

wasn't too pricey...just over $100 (US).

installation was a breeze.

Hey LeonK;

I'd go with a Stainless Magnaflow!! If you want quiet go with the longest one you can find!!! They are a really nice muffler and it will give you a little more lower end torque too!! The Stock muffler is about 22" long so go for something around that size!!! The mufflers come in a whole bunch of different sizes!! Just remember the shorter the muffler the louder the muffler!!! They just weld into place!!
I picked up my Stainless Magnaflow muffler for 110$cdn
Good Luck!!

LeonK, have you looked at the flange yet? I know mine is gone! The whole thing along with bolts looks like melted ice cream. And the interesting part is the exhaust is the only thing rusty on the whole truck. It’s just a horrible exhaust.

To slow the rust on my exhaust system I spray it with High Temp Exhaust paint!!!
Keeps the exhaust looking new!!

look at the "shot of the dual pipes"
