So my rear window of my 96 is coming down lopsided and requires human assistance to bring it back up. There's "stuff going on" in the tracks in the hatch.
Before I go ripping the hatch apart, what is the best member strategy to date? The last time I did this was on a 94 with a tailgate- easy day.
Items of concern:
Do I have to lie on my belly and work it from the inside?
Can I take the lift hatch off?
Is there any magic dust available from JC Whitney that will fix it without my effort?
i would pop the hatch, remove the inside cover. Do something (tape, wooden block etc) to depress the tailgate safety switch (on a 2nd gen as I am sure you know from your 94 it was tricking one of the latch mechanisms to close with a screw driver so you could move the window up and down
Sounds like one of the rails are rusted out, could also be 1 side of the glass support bars hardware pulled through the glass, I replaced the hardware with Carriage bolts after mine rusted through and dropped 1 side of the glass. You are best to work on it in place, no need to remove hatch, I have also replace entire glass and mechanism on my 97' with hatch installed, its not that hard to work on, and self explanatory once you open it up and find the issue, usually a rusted part.
Ok. It looks like I'm going to lie down on this job. Once I'm in there, I'll figure it out. Done a vocoup of these now. One in a 84 Suburban.
Thanks for the links.
The main wiring plug is a little back from and to the left of the dome light, a little under the headliner. A small screw on each side of the dome light trim panel under each side panel will keep you from simply popping it off. Wiring boot and hatch lifts are simple enough. There's the washer fluid line.
It's heavy and I've never taken mine off.
