Question Rear Speakers for 1990 4 runner???

Hi there...
I'm trying to find tips on installing 6.5" or 6"x9" speakers in place of the stock rear 4" speaker boxes. I tried replacing the stock speakers with better ones, but the sound quality was only marginally better. As some other forums members pointed out: 4" speakers don't produce bass freqs.
I totally agree with this after experimenting with the stock speaker boxes.
OK, now...I think I'm ready to cut out the rear panel to fit some bigger speakers. I read a thread about a speaker adapter from crutchfield that keeps the rear panel intact.
Question:
How does a 6.5" speaker behind the rear panel sound compared to a 6"x9" installed on the rear panel?
Anyone have any solutions to installing 6.5" or 6"x9" speakers in the rear panels???
thanks..

Personally, I'd keep the same rears, or just disconnect them. get some good fronts and a sub (w/ amps on both) and you'll be straight. With the soundstage in front of you, the music sounds better (where the sub is doesn't matter).

By the way, never buy from crutchfield, it's grossly overpriced.

just fitted jbls 6x9 s in the rear panel, the stock cover was cracked so got the jigsaw out and cut the hole. had to trim some metal aswell to get the right clearance. also got some jbls to fit the stock fronts. sounds pretty good for $250 canadian.
