When I first start moving, either in a forward gear or reverse, I get 1 - 3 clanks from what seems like the rear of the truck. It also happens when I let off the gas sometimes. The sound is like a wrench hitting a piece pipe...more like a loud "TINK" than a "clank".

This started about six months ago and the dealership says it is normal for these trucks . Well, it wasn't normal for the first 12 years of its life sooooo.... .

I've had the driveshaft rebuilt (noise was happening before this) and the shocks are good.

Any ideas??

 

By driveshaft rebuilt do you mean that all the u joints were replaced?

 

Mine just started doing this too, passenger rear side. I recently had my new gears installed and had u joints done at the same time. I haven't been able to track down what it is yet.

I've gone over all my u-bolts, shocks, etc and can't find anything loose that could be making this noise.

 

Yes, all the U-joints were replaced.

 

im having the same problem , but mine is extremely severe, in fact its so bad that it feels like my whole truck is tearing in two. and it doesnt help that i have a rear locker because when it does do it the rear end trys to straighten out . it feels weird and ill bet looks even more odd. i too had my rear end rebuilt, and ujoints replaced. i just got up under there and lubed the ujoints and driveline. someone had suggested that in an earlier post. while i was tryingto lube the rear ujoint i had to moved the lube thing and got a wrench on it and instead of moving the lube thing it moved the whole driveline . so i started reading in my haynes manual. it states that the rear differential is either defective , which i hope it isnt since it was rebuilt with new gears recently , and also it says possibly out of adjsutment. im assuming theres backlash in there that isnt set right or has become slightly worn . i would take it back to the shop that did the work to have them readjust or fix the problem , but its 2000 miles away. so now im looking for a really good 4x4 shop that knows how to install and adjust locked rear ends in toyotas.
my suggestion for the original poster is too get under the truck and move your driveline by hand and see if theres in slop between the ujoints , hopefully not since you jsut had them replaced. try lubing the driveline and ujoints , then try and move the driveline and see if theres slop at the rear diff. my guess is your rear end is getting ready to go bad . im hoping my problem is it needs to get adjusted or put otgther properly.

I had an old jeep that clunked when I took off or stopped quickly. It turned out that it was the spring perches. Had new ones welded on and it was fine. Wonder if it could be a similar problem...

 

So the light occasional rear clunking noise could be my rear diff? I just had 5.29s and a TrueTrack put in earlier this month. Come to think of it, I never ever had this noise before it was geared. Hmm..

 

My 88 does the same thing as you described, More of a "tink" than a "clank". Happens on take off or letting off the gas, and sometimes just disengaging the clutch at a stop. I've replaced my u-joints twice (needle bearings burnt right out).

This happens intermittently. It seems (havent really kept track of it) that it is remedied for a few weeks when i grease up the the u-joints and the driveshaft. Comes baack to haunt me after going through deep silty water. So, it could possibly be a lube problem. My .02 cents.

 

Loose spare tire. Check it.

 

When I had my lock-rite on my ranger I had this problem all the time. Not sure if that applies to any of your situations.
