No rattling coming from mine. Does it specifically happen when you are going slowly, quickly, turning or going over bumps? Or all the time?

Might sound totally stupid, but I had a rattling and thumping, so I checked. Here the skirt on the inside of the wheel well came off. The little plastic "bolts" that hold it on, broke, or came off or something. I am not saying this is what it is, but check just to be sure! You don't want to look as dumb as I. :fireman:

I had some rattling on mine, too. Thought it was wheel bearings. Had them repacked. Still rattled.
The odd thing was, everytime it rattled, I could feel it through the dead pedal.
Turns out, my brush guard was loose.:pat:
Tightened it down. Problem solved.

I have a similar sound coming from the front PS on my Y2K. Drives me crazy!!! Time to brake out with that fine toothed comb!

I have a similiar rattle on my 94. It sounds just like a center cap rattling but it's not that I checked. Also nothing else seems be loose. Anyone have any ideas?

Did you check the heat shield for the front disc brake? Sometimes they get old, bent, warped, loose, etc. and will make rattling sounds.

You can also check the heat shield for the exhaust/catalytic converter, that may be causing the rattling too.

Hopefully it's something simple like that. I know if any heat shields are loose it makes an awful and consistent rattling sound.

I had a rattle up front and after i had the cv boots changed it went away soit could be something on the shaft that needs lubing or tighting.
(the sound was a bike chain that is not in proper gear sort of metalic and clunky)

Does the frequency change with speed?

Can you get someone to drive along side and see if anything obvious is happening?

Pat Goss did a piece on Motorweek about rattles. He has a device where you put sensors in different areas to narrow down the source of the rattle. Man, I hate rattles.

no, it doesn't change with frequency, it seems constant but you can hear it most when i'm going over bumps..especially a lot of little bumps...my passenger can even hear it if i ask them to listen carefully...it's really annoying..i may just take it to the STEALER and see if they can find it...thanks for the help guys!

I too notice that I can only hear mine when going slow with the window down over small bumps like a rough surface street. I have access to a vehicle lift that I use to change oil and when I had the skid plate off I played around prying on stuff with a screwdriver and could find nothing loose. No shields either.. hmmm well I figure if it's something real bad I woulda found it so I guess I will have to put up with it. I also found a killer find when under my runner this time!!!!!!! I have heard all about greasing the steering stops on a 2nd gen to get rid of the screech but I never knew there were two stops on the backside of the swingarms too!!!!! I was wondering why mine still did it after I greased ONLY the front..hahaha. Sounds nice and quiet now at least for a while. I love it when I find "good stuff" under the truck. That lift is sure nice when you can stand up under your truck to change the oil!! Base charges us $3.00 an hour to use it.. can't beat that.. They also supply all the tools and get rid of the used oil and filter for ya!

Try hitting the tire with your fist and making it rattle while you're close to it. That's what we did with my brother's tundra and figured it's a rock stuck on the skid plate.

If the sound frequency doesn't change with speed, I'd guess it's not around the wheel/brakes or other rotating mass. Mine is starting to make clunking sounds when I go around corners. This is suspension related.

Well I figured out what my rattle is. Its one of the front sway bar end links rubber bushing has worn away and is tapping against the lower arm

Looks like a s**t to replace so I guess its off to the dealer again to get new bushings fitted

oh well :pat:
