quick front diff breather question

i recently noticed diff fluid drips coming out of my front end (again) and i went under to go find the source. wasnt leaking diff seals like last time, it was the diff breather. The metal nipple had come out of the first bit of flex hose (right where it hooks on to the diff) because the joker who was in there swapping my clutch (burned it out in traffic in downtown calgary during my first day at a new job) forgot (?) to replace a bolt that holds a clip on top of the tranny where the breather and some wires go over it.

LONG STORY SHORT: does it make sense that if the nipple popped out down there, that diff fluid would come out slowly as the diff spins? didnt notice a difference in fluid level, which makes me wonder if it was something else.

This is where the nipple came out of the hose.

This is where the bolt should be, but isnt: side note, how the hell do I figure out what size goes in there??
