Question about supercharger belt

Question about supercharger belt

Now that my supercharger has almost 8000 miles on it I am getting a little concerned about the belt. The truck won't run without it since the alternator is also driven by the same belt.

At what mileage should I think about replacing the belt? Has anyone out there broken one?

Noel,

I just checked with my Toyota Service Department, and they said that you replace it when you replace your other belts. They told me to look in my "schedule maintaince" handbook, whenever it tells you to replace your other belts (ie. fan, alternator etc...), that is when you also replace your supercharger belt. I hope he's right, because I at 30K miles right now, and according to my schedule maintaince handbook, I won't need to replace my belts until 60K. So I went ahead and bought an extra supercharger belt, and put it in my Runner, just in case I need it sooner

I bought a spare belt also. Then it will go on when the belts need changing and the old one will be the spare.

I have almost 70,000 miles on my SC belt. After the 60K service, they said the belt was fine and did not recommend replacing it.

I've noticed some cracking in the ribs, so I'll have them all changed next time I need to take it in.

Do you have the tensioner? This insures you have the correct tension and should help prolong the belt life. At 8000 miles, I wouldn't worry about it. Carrying an extra is never a bad idea, just make sure you have the tools to replace it!

Mine broke this week, about 400 miles from home, somewhere near the Kansas/Colorado border. Only had about 4000 miles on it. Lucky I had a spare with me, but changing it on the side of the road was not too fun. Worst part is you have to remove the PS belt and the AC belt to get to the SC/Alt belt. But 1 hour 45 mins later we were cruising again. My arm now looks like I got in a cat fight though LOL.

It happen when I hit the cancel button on the cruise control so I'm wondering if the belt slipped off the auto tensioner pulley. I've seen that URD makes a better pulley with sides to keep the belt from coming off the pulley. Anyone using one of those pulleys?

That's scary it came off for that reason. You're right, the stock pulley doesn't look all that secure. You just have to rely on the proper tightness of the tensioner to keep it in place. I'll have to look into the URD pulley....
