Question about Detroit true-trac in ADD trucks

Thinking of installing a Detroit True trac LSD in the front diff but have a few concerns. Does anyone know for sure if the design of this LSD allows one side to turn independently of the other, without turning the whole ring gear along with the driveshaft? I really don't want that to be happening when im not in 4x4.. Thanks!

ADD disconnects the diff from doing anything, but your driveline will still spin. You need to switch to hub locks vice ADD. It is the preferred "soft" locker for the front axle. Soft because unlike a Detroit it doesn't smack your thumbs when it locks. Now please keep in mind if you put a locker in the front & have a locked t-case you must keep your thumbs out of the wheel, or you will lose them. A trip to the emergency room to reattach them is not a fun excursion. The big danger is a broken axle since all engine power goes into spinning the wheel, its freaky as it tries to take fingers and thumbs.

Thanks for the reply, but the bolded part is wrong. ADD ONLY disconnects one of the CV axles (passenger side). The drivers side one is still connected to the diff and is turning the spider gears inside the case. Spider gears are easier to turn than the whole case with the driveshaft, so that's what happens. On a factory truck, the front driveshaft DOES NOT spin unless in 4x4 mode. My question is whether or not it will stay this way with Detroit LSD (since they don't have "normal" spider gears inside the case)

Uhhh...this has nothing to do with the locker. When offroading, the steering wheel can "kick" and the spokes *could* conceivably smack your thumbs.

Personally, I've seen way too many non-functioning True-Tracs to recommend one. If you really need a locker, LSDs are no substitute.
