So winter break is coming up here shortly and im doing some major maintenance. Not exactly a overhaul should be a fun project non the less. i need to get myself a FSM finally

consists of:
Install ome lift 881/890
replacing upper ball joints - any write ups on this?
change all fluids
switched to syn in the motor last mo so thats good to go
i need 75w-90 for the diffs and transfer case right?
Havent really read up on what i need for tranny? input?
new belts
thinking about getting a trueflow filter but i think im gonna wait a little while longer
then top off the little things
thinking about doing rear diff breather while im at it

im excited for this. anyone have any pointer and/or opinons

I recently swapped my front and rear diff, transfer case & transmission all over to Amsoil. For the trans, they offer a great universal ATF. For the gear oil, I went with the severe gear 75W-90 oil. Check them both out at their site: http://www.amsoil.com/

You can sign up to become a preferred customer by paying a one time $10 membership fee. Granted, the membership is only good for 6 months, but you can always renew it. Being a preferred customer is great b/c you can purchase their products at wholesale prices. Having swapped all my fluids over (and my wife's 4Runner tranny too) to amsoil, I've already saved over a $100 had I paid full price for the stuff. Definitely worth it IMO.

 

is amsoil really worth it? i cant really fit it into my budget, gotta love being in college with no job.

 

IMO, it's worth it.

If you can't fit it in your budget, then ask for it for Christmas . Seriously though, just search for a good alternative fluid if Amsoil is out of the question. However, you may find that overall, amsoil isn't really that much more expensive compared to the benefits of it vs the competitors.

another alt is redline oil, I have been using it for years with awsome results. Also you should be able to find it locally.

 

glad to hear you are going with the 890s in the rear.

I am useless mechanically and found the rear diff breather easy to do. Let me know if you need help. NO question is stupid. You can do before or after the lift-you will be leaving extra "slack" in the extension line for your increased suspension travel.

And go synthetic everywhere you can, it does not cost that much more for the benefit.

I think the 890s are the right choice for me. Im excited the box of goodies is sitting at my parents house right now. I have one more final tomorrow afternoon then im off on a 7 hour drive on thursday afternoon. then the projects begin . As for the ball joints, are there any write ups on how to do it?

I just spoke with Runner owner here in Denver whose ball joint failed causing wheel to tuck under the vehicle crossing a railroad track-vehicle ended up totalled.

 

yeah ive got new ones sitting at home, so its going to be a learning experience for me just looking to see if anyone has done a write up on how to replace them.

 

I plan on doing upper ball joints myself in the spring,some of the grease has just started to collect dust on the boot end.I plan on getting this set and replacing them..I think harbor freight has a cheaper kit as well..

has anyone used the harbor freight spring compressors? Would you trust them? they will be on OME 881's

I rented 2 autozone spring compressors and used 3 of the 4 compressors to do my 881's I would not trust just 2.

 

ok well then i guess im calling some local shops to see how much they want to put some struts together. How much should i be expecting it to cost? Ill take all the parts in

 

I paid the guy at the local midas to assemble my struts, took the old struts to him and he charged me $25.00.

 

also when you do it make sure you align the top plate to lower eye it will make it easier to get back in.
