Problems Shifting Into L4 On a 3rd Gen!

I put in neutral pressed the 4WD button the side and that worked perfectly in H4. I put in neutral again, I attempted to put in L4 but a weird noise was happening while I was trying to put it in L4, I even tapped it towards L4 it would make that noise. I'm not sure if its real cold and I haven't used the L4 since last year or something is screwed up. It was sorta like a errrr sound, even purshing towards L4 it would push back and make that noise. After I tried attempting to put it in L4, while changing it to H4, it made the noise again. I hope I didn't break anything.

Did the shifter vibrate while making that noise? Mine has done something similar to what you are describing, but there is a vibration which accompanies the noise.

First, you don't need to put in neutral to go to H4, and you don't need to push the button on the side of the transfer case shift knob if you're going into H4. The button's only for an AWD mode, the owners manual explains about that.
As for 4L, yes put it in neutral. I get a little vibration and slight sound as the lower range gears are engaged. Just push it into gear nice and firm and see what happens. I think you're only going halfway.

this is normal. its just b/c the gears are moving at different speeds and there is some grinding (or something like this). its been brought up before.

best way to solve this. come to a complete stop, foot on brake, tranny in N, shift into 4L. try to force it in there a lil if it wont go.

You may want to try shifting from H2 (4wd button OFF) to 4Lo while going very slow. Again, button off, go slow.

Make sure you are completly stopped and in neutral. I got that noise once when I forgot to put the transmission in neutral.
