As for the new motor. I replaced mine at 220,000 still running. Had some extra money got a purdy new marlin transmission. Mailed my old trans back to marlin with dreams of $$$ from my core fee dancing in my head. Suprise, two of the gears were going to come apart and the spindle piece that fits in the pilot bearing was shot. Kinda put a dent in my core return, but saved me a ton of heartache in the long run, cause the transmission failing was imminent.

so what I'm saying is that your not dealing with a mint condition ride. And realize that that with old trucks breaks and no one here can give you the best advice as to what to do. Cowboy up, make a decision that you can live with and be prepare to live and learn.

Can you do the work yourself?
Can you get an engine for cheap?
You got extra cash?
Do you got kids? So that they don't have to pay for your oh lesson learned kinda things?
can you ride a bike to work/school or do you have another car?

What I'm getting at is that everyone is in a different position in life, you decide.

 

Hence why more and more people just toss the trucks and let all the parts get destroyed.

 

Seems very odd that you would have this severe of a failure at 116k.

 

I've heard of a few of these now, seem like its usually a 98 or 99 4runner.

 

since the motors blown.... i hear a little bird whispering small block swap... he is also saying supra V6 turbo....

 

I hope that is not true--i just bought a 99 that i am putting a crap load of toys into--i would cry and be devistated

 

You know what would be nice? AN LS1 or a Lexus V-8--that would be nice

 

The key word was a "few". I'm sure it is a very small % of engines having problems.

 

Yeah - my 99 that broke a rod was my fault - not a quality issue...

 

I've seen thrown rods on almost any year 4runner with a 5VZ-FE motor (the 3VZ-FE threw rods occasionally too), but everyone needs to keep in mind this is still very rare (unless you have forced induction) so there's not much to be worrying about here.

A motor swap isn't that hard on these vehicles (4WD is a little more work) so just find a good used motor and start swapping.

 

If you could show me a supra V-6 I would be mighty suprised.

I would follow the advice of people saying see what's wrong with the engine before just tossing the old one. If you threw a rod it's usually a loud bang and then the engine won't ever turn over again. I really hate doing that on lawn mowers cause you're trying to pull the cord and nothing moves.

Anyways, I would guess it something else. Check your oil levels and see if you can find a leak. Fill it back with oil and fire her up if you can't find anything specific. If it turns over it shouldn't be a rod. If you're looking at reaplcing an engine anyways might as well see if you can get her to run, what are you going to do if something goes wrong? Replace it. You're already in that boat.

The reason they would be surprised to see a V6 supra swap, is because the Supra never came with a V6
