If you wind up involved with someone who doesn't drive stick, teach them!I've done it on more than one occaision.

Anyone can drive auto, so make that special someone feel that much more, uh, special....

I'll never forget going for a test-drive in a 1st generation '89 Toy MR2. It was "her" (unnamed of course) turn to drive. She climbed in, adjusted her mirrors grabbed the rather "uniquely" shaped shifter, put it in first...then got a funny look on her face and look at the lever. And awaaay we went.

I sure liked that car.

Manuall all the way! The only pain is that it is hard to keep it from rolling backward on steep grades like in Seatle.

When you stop, engage your parking brake. As you take off, let the clutch out until you feel it grab, release the parking brake, giv'er some gas, and go.

Go with the stick.

You drive it, instead of the other way around.

It's more reliable. (I know slushboxes have gotten a lot better, but more complex = more stuff that can go wrong.)

And, you say you plan on keeping it for a long time. Other things being equal, the manual will outlast the auto every time.

As for age, my dad is in his 60's and still drives a truck w/a manual.

Finally, it's more fun!

I giggled the first time I used it.

What? Tell me more! I thought it was just so you didn't have to push in the clutch to start the engine.

reminds me of a guy who was in front of me in a jeep comanche a few weeks back. every time he'd stop then start again, i'd hear his starter crank. must have blown out his clutch hydraulics(been there, done that, NOT fun)

Just go with what you're used to. If you eat a lot while driving go auto. If you get stuck in a lot of stop and go traffic go auto. Otherwise, go manual. I have been driving my 5-speed for 4 years now and love it. I just feel like I have alot more control. But it's really up to you and what you like.

Stick is quicker from a stop and you'll eek out a mile or three better per gallon gas mileage if you drive nice. I drive kind of aggressive with mine and I still see no less than 17mpg unless some off roading is involved.

My previous truck was a stick. Loved it for crawling slow, but it was a PIA in stop/go traffic. Another thing was, letting other people drive it. Whether it was some 17yr old kid Valet,( whose eyes lit up thinking about all the fresh snow in the back parking lot) or a friend who just doesn't understand the finesse of driving a stick truck smoothly, It made me nuts to let them drive. Also, driving stick with a broken leg (I've had 2) can be a drag. Now that I have an automatic, I'm torn. I love it in the city (Denver/Boulder) but wish I had a stick climbing the long I 70 grade up the divide. Although my auto does an acceptable job, If I have a bunch of boats on the rack, it gets a little slower and I need to play the choose the gear game. I'd have to say I see pro's and con's in both equally.
What I do find really convenient about an AT is i can talk on the phone, change CD's, and reach around for stuff in the back seat without missing a beat.

OK, now go git it

Auto = more versatile. One of my pet peeves are ricers with M/T that let their car roll back and forth at red lights . Why do they do that?? To show off that they can drive a stick?
