Plastic contraption under 2nd gen. air box

Hey all
I'm just about to do Blu's intake mod on my 2nd gen runner. Was just wondering what that funny shaped long plastic box is that hangs off the bottom/side of the airbox. It joins into the inlet pipe just after the AFM, and has small dia. hose running off the other end into a jumble of other small dia. hoses. Would appreciate knowing what it does before i rip it out.
Cheers

Well, I'm not sure what it is, either, but I ripped mine out anyway. I have a K&N FIPK attached directly to the MAS. One smaller diameter hose runs from the MAS to a point of attachment on the front of the engine block, just above the altenator. The MAS then connects directly to the large, hard plastic elbow tube that runs to the throttle body. I've been running it like that for over a year without any problems.

Thats the air resonator. it sends little timed impulses of air through the intake for better power and fuel milage. I have an open element K&N and kept it, it can't hurt.
