pinions?

What is the differance between 2 pinion and 4 pinion dif? I can't picture it. Also where is the best place to get a third member rebuilt? I have a 92 4 runner and it has high miles but otherwise exc shape. Starting to whine pretty bad and the last guy has already had it retorqued according to the receipts that I got. It has about 30 degrees of free play at the pinion. That seems like a lot to me.

dont realli kno the difference between the two types of pinions, but i kno a place that does gears. i just recently busted my pinion and ring gear. i took it to a place called "performance 4wheel drive" . they did my r&p for $400. $200 for US Gears, not some cheezy "genuine gears" that 4wheelparts performance center sells (made in brazil or something. cheapy!!! ) and $190 for the labor. i took the 3rd member to them though.

Performance 4 Wheel Drive
9817 Park Street
Bellflower, CA 90706

or try...

Gear Shop

Pinion gear is a misnomer in this case, it's actually referring to the spider gears in the differential itself. 4cyl diffs have two spiders, V6 and turbo diffs have 4.

Thanks for the info.. I have found a place here that I have heard good things about. Anyway, I have found out that the 4.30:1 gears are toyota ownly to the tune or $750 for a gear set.
Once I found out if I will need a new set I may just go with new sets on both ends since it will cost the same. I need to now if any one knows of a good site with a couple of formulas so I can figure out how much my cruising RPM will be affected with a 4.10 or 4.88. I have 31X10.50's right now and would like to keep that size but may have to change. It runs about 3100 at 70 mph right now. I don't want it to run much higher than that on the highway. Anybody using the 4.88's with 31x10.50's or 4.10's? Also what is the ratio of 5th gear in the 5 speed? Thanks
