Question Pinging? Octane Rating.....

What does 'pinging' sound like? For that matter, what does 'knocking' sound like and what induces the sound? Also, you increase the octane until the pinging stops?

Thanks,
STeve

pinging is a crackling sound in your engine. some people refer it to sounding like marbles shaking in a can. i dont think i have ever heard knocking but i assume it would be a bit louder than pinging. someone correct me if im wrong

I was under the impression that pinging and knocking were the same thing. I dunno.
Anyhow, it sounds sorta like a car deiseling, or, like casey said, marbles in a can. My 4Runner has been doing it for a while now. I've been trying to trace it down, but not sure what's causing it. It happens when I accelerate or climb a hill. However, when the tranny drops into 3rd to go up the hill, it goes away.

Increasing the octane on mine hasn't made the pingine (or whatever it's called) go away. It has helped to slow down the frequency of it, but other than that, it hasn't really had any effect.

As far as what induces the sound, I'm not really sure. I guess there are several things. It could be the knock sensor, o2 sensor, bad timing, and a whole bunch of other stuff. I'm not a pro at this kind of stuff, but those are my ideas.

Well, have fun.

Over advanced timing or low octane can cause pinging. Its a rattling sound usually under load. Does sound like a diesel i guess.

Well, spark knock, pinging, preignition and detonation are all the same thing. It usually rears its head when the engine is under a fair bit of load. It usually goes away or diminishes when the engine load is reduced(like dowshifting or easing off the gas). The 'other' knocking comes from things like worn rod bearings and sounds distinctly different than pinging. It also usually happens at startup or when the engine is lugging.

zedex is right too. Too much compression and too little octane will make ad engine ping and too much timing advance/too low octane will do the same. From all the descriptions I've read, the 'sounds like an engine dieseling' one is the most accurate. Marbles in a can? Eh, no.

Interesting, prior to gettin my FIPK for my 3.slow, I could hear a wierd noise, right after the tranny would drop the RPM's by dropping into the next gear. It almost sounded like there was something on top of the cylinder that could move around with the cylinder and clatter when the load on the engine was relieved....

I haven't heard it sincen the FIPK though.....
