Pick-your-part and a testiment to Toyotas

So, I took a venture down to the Calgary Pick-your-part...or pull-a-part, what ever they're calling themselves now. I was looking for a set of locking hubs, and I found them, bairley. I only found 1 4Runner/truck in the entire place(and it's not a small wrecker), in the whole place, just one first gen Runner. There are a whole lot of 4Runners and toyota trucks floating around Calgary, so it's seem impressive that there wern't more at the wrecker.

Anyways, I found one Aisin hub on the 1st Gen I found, snagged that easy. Unfortunatley it only had one. I found a second Aisin hub on a Suzuki. I compaired that hub to the toyota one, and apart from some cosmectic differences they seemed to be the same, the front faces/dials where interchangable, and the bolt patterns were the same. So I'm hoping that someone can confirm for me that I can in fact use the Suzuki hub I found.

Oh yeah, the best part, I got a pair of hubs and a set of Toyota mud flaps, and my grand total was only $19! (Cdn!)

Hey Bill,

Did that 4-runner have the back seat in it still. I am looking for a back seat for my 92 to use as a t6hird row.

I believe the spline count on the Suzuki hubs are different than the Toyota. So, the axle won't fit in the hub.

yeah, just about every japanese-made 4x4 used aisin hubs, except for nissan. this would include mitsu, isuzu, toyota and suzuki. biggest difference is the spline count, and i think one manufacturer uses a larger/smaller body than the rest.

Actually, it did. Most of the interior was pulled apart, but still there in pieces. It's in the 2nd last row of SUV/mini-vans if you were interested.

And about my hub issues. I went back because, well, I was bored. I found out that the 2nd hub wasn't off a Suzuki, rather it was off a Geo Tracker. I figured I'd try an install(just to see). Turns out all the spacing, spline count, and whatnot does work EXCEPT: the Geo axle shafts are about 1/16" smaller than Toyota axles! Oh well, it's was only $8 and it gives me a reason to go back.

Yeah, I've had a hard time finding salvage yards with Toyotas. I went to the Pull-A-Part here in Charlotte, and they only had 4 toyota trucks there. A 2wd '84 PU, a 2wd '92 PU, a late 1st gen 4runner, and another older truck. No 2nd gen 4runners.

I was looking for a solid axle, and the guy at the counter said they had 4 toyotas out there, so I paid $1.00 to get in and all but one toyota were 2wd. The only 4x4 was the 4runner, but it was IFS. Those people didn't know a thing.

It was very organized and lots of cars there.

But, it has been really had to find Toyotas in the salvage yard. So, I guess that's good!

Have fun all.

The local pullapart to me doesn't have any toyotas in it... A nice testament to Toyota but at the same time it kind of sucks when you want to try and find a part.

Ya the Calgary one charges $1 as well and won't let kids in anymore. They say it has to do with insurance. My kids were bummed.

yah and its $2 in so cal, just to go look for something (car or part) that may not even be there. i rarely see any toyotas in this type of JY. you can go to specialized junk yota dealers that have only yotas (or ford or ...) but you don't get to look at what they have in the yard (insurance?) just ask for the part and they go get it. i like to kick tires and see what other parts people have taken and then get spares for myself

i've never had to pay to get into yards here, but i have noticed a disturbing trend of yards shutting down to letting people in, or even sending an escort out with you to keep an eye on things. my favorite junkyard now does this, they said it's because of people beating up on their stock, jumping up and down on hoods and breaking glass etc. what the hell is wrong with people?

I checked them out today, they did have a pretty good toyota stock. But I really like pulling my own parts off...gives me a good idea how they go back on. I ended up going to A&V Auto Parts Depot, same area as A1, found an almost complete 1st Gen to raid. Spent a "tad" more than Pick-your-part, but also didn't have to spend 3hrs looking for a vehicle.

I haven't heard of that place. Can you pull your own parts there? It is almost impossible to find 2nd gen at a pull your own part place.

hill - A1 Auto Parts is at about 7300 36st NE. If you go north on 36st from McKnight, which turns into 44st, go all the way till 80th Ave, and go west till you get to pretty much the end of the road. Go south on 36th, and watch for the signs.

Celica - I'm not sure if A&V's normal policy is for you to pull your own stuff. But the guy asked when I wanted the parts. I mentioned that I could do it, and he said if I had the tools to go for it.
