Pic of the Speedometer Problem I'm Dealing With

Well guys, here's a pic of the speedometer needle as is.

I removed both the tach "needle stop" and the speedometer "needle stop." You can see how much difference there is in the two, which clearly explains why the speedometer is reading 20 mph too low. The speedometer needle is not resting on the white plastic, it just stops really close to it. A local salvage yard quoted me $250 today for a used instrument cluster, but I don't know what I'd do about the odometer. I don't know if it can be transplanted, re-calbrated to my mileage or what? I am so pissed right now that I got myself into this that I can't stand it.

You can't pull the needle off the spindle and put it back on close to zero??? If you can't pull the needle off, then how did you get the white face on?

If you can't, then check the classifieds for the guy parting out the 3rd gen. He has an instrument cluster. As far as re-doing the mileage, you're screwed.

If it bothers you that bad, bring it over and I'll see if I can do anything for ya. Another set of eyes never hurts.

Oh my god, that was nerve racking. I finally got the needle to pop off and I am very pleased with the results. Here's a pic...

Now to go put everything back in and go for a drive and hope for the best. I'll keep you posted.

Bummer.

For whatever its worth, I have an SR5 cluster I'm wanting to put into my truck, however, when I was playing with the cluster the day I recieved it, I moved the speedometer needle as well and the same thing happened.

Fortunately, with the 2ND GEN, you don't have the reset button there so you can move the needle past the 110 mark, or as far as you want it; when you move it back, its beginning position moves up as well.

Example, if you were to move the needle past the 110 mark, when you reset the needle, its sitting position would be around 10 MPH mark instead of pointing downward as shown in the first image.

After seeing this thread, and knowing what I did with the cluster, I probably won't take the chance to swap it.

Well, it's ten fold better. Still not perfect, but I'm hoping the dealership will be able to calibrate it now. They could not cal it before because they would have had to put in a -20 mph bias into the computer, and the computer will not take a negative number. I'm gonna get my girlfriend to pace me on the interstate tonight with the cruise set and see just how far I'm off. Thanks for everyones help, especially Foxtrapper. Later.

I missed what you said on how to fix that.

Can you re-state it?

Thanks.

Here's a cut & paste from an earlier thread:

As far as pulling the needle off. I gently used a small screwdriver and eased it off. I put the tip of a small flathead screwdriver underneath one side and then pulled with my fingers on the base of the needle straight up. It didn't take a whole lot for it to come off. Once you've pulled the needle off, don't put it back on at "zero". It will be off. If you pull the needle stop off, you'll see that the needle will drop about a half an inch. It's suppost to do that.

As far as re-cal your needles...it's noooo big deal. I've done it a few times. Save your $$$ and do it yourself. The easiest way I re-cal is to have the needle off and have a friend drive next to me at a set speed. We have our cell phones on(I use my hands free speaker phone)and discuss what speed he is at. Then I slip the needle on at that speed.

I just got back from having my girlfriend pace me on the interstate. I'm reading 3 mph faster than hers. I am DEFINITELY very, very pleased. Much better than 20 mph slow. Hopefully, the dealership will be able to calibrate it now. My god, that was so nerve racking but I'm glad it turned out the way it did. Thanks again for ya'lls help. Later.

See, that wasn't so bad, was it... Now DON'T go pay the dealer to recalibrate it. Just pop the needle off and move it an 1/8"-3/16" or so lower and you'll be set.

King,
What year is that SR5 cluster from? If you decide not to use it, maybe we could work something out. Let me know.

Just for future reference, I just got a cluster from a '98 Taco from a place I found on car-parts.com

with s&h it was about $60. Might be a good place to check should it ever be necessary.

Mine did that on my 91 when installing my white faces so I took the speedometer out of the cluster and found it had a stop on the back side which could be pushed into the desired location with a screw driver. Not sure if yours is the same thoug.
