I agree with Hill - use a pod / box. salt will kill your newly tunded board/skis. lockable and keeps things out of sight (compared to racks). You can also throw overflow luggage up there for longer trips.

Probably the best bang for the buck setup is the Yakima Railrider on the factory rails. I bought my Railriders used for $20. There is a newer version out that allows you to easily separate the "mount" from the "feet", but they sit much higher off the roof than mine. The newer ones are nice if you take the rack on and off frequently.
