Parking Brake Adjustment

In a 3rd gen Runner, do you adjust the parking brake using the nut near the handle or do you need to go under the truck? I tried the backing up maneuver while pulling the brake but it did not tighten the cable.

TS1,

Are you talking about the "length of the pull" of the ebrake itself? If so, its just a matter of undoing the center (arm rest) console. Take a look at my write up here:

http://www.4runners.org/articles/cupholder

Under Step 2, look at the first pic on the left. Its a top view of your ebrake. There are two opposing nuts, unscrew the top one a few turns, then screw the other one lower. Then screw the top one downwards. Your ebrake should take less "pull" to fully set.

The other thing I was thinking about is that if you have a lift, you might need an ebrake bracket. Tom and Steve installed one on mine when they put my PP 1" springs in. Ask them for more details.

Bob,

I just looked up in the Haynes manual at the store that the 4Runner should have between 7-9 clicks of the handle for normal operation of the brake. I have 7 but I just thought it was loose. I think I will leave it for now. I know the nut you are talking about but how do you undo the center console to access the nut? I don't want to break any tabs.

I will read your writeup.

Thanks

TS1:

Easy to remove. First, take out all the crap out of your console storage area. Use a 12mm (or was it 10?) mm socket w/ an extension to remove the two bolts.

Up at the front of the console, unscrew the two philips head screws on either side of it. Lift up.
