Does it take a few miles to work better? I just finished getting everything back together added in the trans fluid and now it shift VERY smooth but at take off (first gear), it takes a second to kick in. It does not jerk or jump into gear it just takes a second and then it goes.

It takes 6 quarts of tranny fluid to fill, not 2 as the book says. It is all fixed and the light is off, thanks for all the help. I am going to submit a tech write up on this one to try and help anyone else that has this problem.

Do any of you change your own tranny fluid? If so is there a good tech write up on doing this? Because a drain and fill only replaces a few quarts. Also if you were to change to synthetic is there a special procedure? I have heard many typical transmission fluid changes does not change out all of the old fluid. Please educate me on proper trany maintenance.

That is real helpful! I have searched and searched and can not find a write up for servicing the the auto tranny in a 1996 4runner. Anyone care to point me in the right direction or even provide a link. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks and happy Yota trails!

mt_goat, a very knowledgeable user here found all these links to information on how to diagnose and fix this:
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/4...ocation-137360 - Original post
http://members.cox.net/mgriese5/Level10.html - Write up on how to remove the solenoids
http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/index.html - Manuel's on Toyota's that can be downloaded
Hi Folk's - i've got a stock 2000 4Runner SR5, 3.4 with an auto A340F. It's throwing a CEL of P0753. The tranny will 'slip' upon acceleration up to a certain point, then behave as normal once moving over about 20-25 MPH. Shifting from L to 2 to D works.

I purchased a Denso shift solenoid (85420-21090) from the local Toyota dealer and attempted to put it in. After dropping the pan, i took a Fluke meter to each of the three solenoids. The one that sits by itself - towards the rear of the rig - measured about 13.5 ohms resistance, which is good. The two solenoids, side by side, towards the front of the truck, each measured about 10.2 0hms resistance. I know the FSM states that 11-15 ohms is acceptable, and I realize 10.2 is outside that range, but is it a case where as close to the 11-15 ohm range the solenoid is, it won't function?

Now, the part # 85420-21090 seems to be the right one, yet it does not match any of the solenoids in the tramnsmission. The mounting holes simply do not line up. The solenoids in the tranny are not Denso's, they're AISIN. Maybe this is a dumb question but, should the Denso and AISIN solenoids be interchangeable? it's a bit disheartening to go through the trouble of draining and dropping the pan, then finding out that the solenoid does not match up...

Help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Go Yankees!

The new solinoids are different then the old ones. They look completely different but line up correctly. Here is a link to the write up that I did when I replaced that part: Link to writeup

Both solenoids are the same and the only one that is different is the one on the front of the tranny.
