overheating issues

So I think I got to the bottom of the overheating issue I am having...

Just flushed, and changed a ton of cooling system parts. I've gone through two after market fan clutches (returned the first one and bought the one with a lifetime warranty).

This sucker barely spins when it's cold (like it is supposed to), but at operating temp, I can stop the freakin fan blades with my hands easily!!!!! (old type of fan with the large ring around it, so it's somewhat safe).

I shouldn't be able to stop the fan when engine's hot and at idle, right?

yes it is supposed to stop.... you are restricting it from moving...... its when it wont stop and is always engaged and locked up that the fan clutch is bad.....

i don't think you should be able to stop it by hand *when it is hot*.

the way to test your fan clutch is to tie a piece of kite string to the fan and tie the other end to the side of the engine compartment. when cold, the kite string should be able to hold the fan from turning. however, when hot, the fan should break the kite string.

the idea is for the fan to not spin much when the engine is cold and the fan is not needed. however, when the engine gets hot, the fan clutch needs to engage so that it draws enough air through the radiator to remve heat from the coolant. sounds to me like yours is not engaging properly if you can stop it by hand when it is hot.
