Other transmission coolers?

I don't go off-roading, but being in NY I am in stop and go traffic. I would like to save my tranny, but do I need the Hayden 1678? Can I go with a smaller one, or will the Hayden 1678 be perfect for stop and go? I saw a smaller one, by tru-cool. Would this be ok?

Yes that will work fine for your application. Anything will benefit the tranny. It's towing or a S/C that will really matter, do you do/have either?

I won't be towing anything and I don't have a s/c. Can't afford all the upgrades you need to do to have the s/c work right. I want to do the headers, exhaust, and tranny cooler, but money is an issue. I would rather do the upgrades that will benefit my truck first, which the tranny cooler would. I still have to change my O2 sensors and thermostat, so my mods are moving slowly. Also, I have a 7 month old son, so he comes before my big baby (4Runner).

The larger the tranny cooler, the more efficient the cooling. No, you don't have to use the Hayden, but it fits conveniently on our vehicles. I think its worth it, especially with the bigger tires I'm running.

How about the winter? Will having the cooler affect it negatively? It gets pretty cold up here.

Hmm... it might take a little longer for the engine to come up to full operating temperature, but I wouldn't think that would cause too much trouble.

I see you live in Seattle, so it gets cool there too, and you have the tranny cooler. How did you position yours, before or after the stock cooler. I think I read that before the stock cooler wouldn't cool the tranny as much as if it were after the stock cooler. I might want to put it before the stock cooler. What do you think?

I am curious about how a tranny cooler is going to have an effect on the engine warming up in any significant fashion. Other than being bolted to one another and the tranny having an element in the main radiator, the two are pretty distinct systems. The fluids don't intermingle.

Care to enlighten me?

I think it might be a good idea, it would take some of the heat out of the radiator. I guess it depends on if you want to cool both your engine and tranny or just your tranny.

Then just install it on the return line from the radiator.

I'm not finding a 1678 model, is the 678 the same? Did they maybe change model numbers?

IIRC the 1678 was discontinued or are out of stock in the US, but you can still get them on ebay.

The Tru-cool coolers let the ATF bypass the cooler when the fluid is too cool.

That's the first I've heard of the 1678 being discontinued. This explains why my local NAPA, Autozone, & Advance stores have no listing for the Hayden 1678. The 1678 seems to be the most popular cooler recomended here yet I just now learn it is not made anymore?! Thanks for clearing that up! So...is ebay the only source now?

Rob- through the flux capacitor of course....- I actually thought of that on the way out the door after posting that this morning. "Technically" you would get some conductance of heat from the engine to the tranny merely due to the fact that they're bolted together, but this heat exchange is probably minimal compared to that of the fluid. I don't think its much of an issue either way.

I picked up a model 678 "Rapid-cool" at Pepboys yesterday. I don't know if it is the same as the 1678 though. It seems to be about the same size 11 x 9.75 x .75 and price. It says on the applications: "Up to class "C" motorhomes, towing up to 5000 lbs". It is a stacked plate type cooler.

I work at a Ford dealer and just got a cooler off an Exploder--it looks a little bigger than the ones I have seen on this board, but it will fit perfectly behind my skidplate--can you guys with 2nd gens post some pics of your installs?

How much mt_goat? Was it a Hayden 678 rapid cool? I guess it might be the same model since I've seen the Hayden 1678 referred to as 678 on ebay. Are you gonna install it soon?
