Hi folks,

I recalled awhile ago that Amsubfighter (James) posted this question on ODW. I tried to search for the topic over there but no go.

So what was the verdict? What are the pros/cons for each? Is one better than the other?

Hi Bob. That's a tough question. My very first 4Runner was a brand new 2000 right off the floor. I leased it. The lease expired and I then bought a 1993 4Runner. I'm the third owner and it has been a local vehicle in my town. Without a doubt there is something to be said about driving away in a brand new vehicle and let it be said that my 2000 Runner was without a doubt the BEST machine I ever owned. It did everything exceptionaly well. I drove it back and forth from Colorado to Florida several times. Took it off road here in Colorado and it performed effortlessly in both situations. My 93 can't quite fill the same shoes as my 2000. It is a bit smaller inside, less power, a few less accesories, and it doesn't have that "new car" smell or feel. But! It too performes as well off road as it does on the pavement. I'm VERY happy with it and I get compliments on it everywhere I go. She's in excellent condition, has been taken very care of by the 2 previous owners and to sum it all up.... I don't think you can go wrong with any 4Runner you happen to buy. That is of course that you don't buy one that has been beat to hell and back and not treated like the fine machine it is. Good luck and I hope this helps you.

 

Scotts, he is talking about the TRD supercharger actually.

From what I have read, the 1st gen *supposedly* produces a little more torque. There are a few things they changed on the 2nd gen which contributed to this, all of which I can't remember. I believe it has to do with the pulley and something else. I know it was discussed on ODW in detail, maybe your search wasn't clear enough? I'll do a search and re-post.

It really depends what you are looking for. Either the best or worst aspect of my second gen is it look so factory. I pop the hood and people expect some Mad Max esque blower. They are at first a little dissapointed that it is so compact and looks like it left the factory looking like that.

The 2nd gen is made to look factory, is compact and quiet. It can be made to run quite nicely Thankyou and at the end of the day, I don't want if for shaving tenths of my 1/4 mile.

It provides gobs of torque and makes the truck run a like a V8 with V6 economy. Passing performance is excellent.

For what its worth, my quage shows 7 psi of boost but performance is influenced more by gas quality and air temp than anything else.

Personally, I believe the 2nd gen is a more refined product and like any performance mod, if the the 1st gen produces more boost, it can really only be realized with headers and fuel system mods.

For the best true bolt on mod, go with the 2nd gen. For the biggest potential provided you want to upgrade everything else, try the 1st gen if you can find one.
