Question Is it ok to switch to synthetic oil?

I now have almost 120K on my 3.0. I do have a small oil leak and have now added some stuff to the oil to help seal up the gaskets. I'm not sure if it has worked yet because it has only been about 500 miles.

I thought that I had read that if you add sythetic oil to a motor with leaks that it will leak worse. Is this true?

If my oil leaks do go away will it then be ok to run sythetic oil? Or will the leaks just come back?

I would like to start running Amsoil, but am not sure if that is a good idea.

Thanks for the input.

I wouldn't.

There is an old saying "Synthetic oils don't cause a problem, but, if you have a problem they will find it".

Thumbs down

:pat: I agree with Mick.Don't do it.Synthetic gives better protection and takes longer to break down viscosity. But high mileage engines have weakened seals and synthetic will find its way thru them. You could try it though at your next oil change to see what happens.I've not had good luck with it in high mileage vehicles.Good luck!

Fix your leak and then switch. Those additives can only try to do so much - once the gasket or silicone sealant are failing the problem can only get worse.
