Ok, I removed one of my running boards. What do I do about
#22
I never had running boards, but did have that piece on the rear fender. In fact, until you brought it up, it never occured to me that it could look out of place. It worked pretty well for me keeping mud as much under control as possible.
When I got bigger tires that threatened to rub, my solution was patience and a really sharp utility knife. I trimmed mine out and rounded it so that it looks like the natural curve from the fender.
However, I do have sliders......: )

Hey all,
I've been thinking about taking my running boards off so I searched
and found this thread.
Well today I was hosing off the pine needles and noticed dirt would pour out onto the running boards when I sprayed the fender flares...
Anyone else discover a huge slug of dirt / sand / silt inside thier fender flare!?

The only thing I can think is that it's making it in here...

Look how much stuff there is

I also need to find out how to stop the fender flare from rubbing off my paint. I have some white spots around the edges.

Go for the sliders. Awsome off road and damn nice in the parking lots full of shopping carts also. I had a guy open his car door into mine while I was parked waiting for the wife. Huge dent in his door and I am sure would have been on mine also without the sliders. Peace of mind on the trails. I have to say I am bias towards stubbs sliders. Although there are lots of good designs out there. Richard is just a heck of a nice guy to do business with. Even if you don't put sliders on, it looks 10x better without the running boards.

Gavin, I just took mine off tonight (at least one side) and I have the same issue as you. We have the running boards that were made to work with the flares. The other red truck that posted has the flares that don't have the running boards so his looks fine.
The piece that you circled didn't look as weird for me as the front piece that's just missing.
Anyway, I put on a nerf bar and just trimmed the flare to fit. I'm still deciding if I need to trim more. Everyone is right though that the truck looked way better without the running boards. I just wish I didn't have to put step bars for others.

Front Splash Guards :
Whenever you take your vehicle off road there is a chance of damaging the factory running boards. It takes very little time to remove them. Sometimes I will remove them and when I do I like to install these Toyota Splashguards. They are made to fit the factory SR5 black textured flares I have on my Highlander.
Toyota part numbers:
00547-35966DF (driver side)
00547-35961PF (passenger side)
The shouldn't be that much $. The rear looks fine to me

Gavin,
I carved my rear flare up and here's how it looks. I still need to get the front flaps but I'm pretty happy on how the truck looks w/o the running boards.
BTW, my 5 foot g/f can jump in just fine with the side handle to help her. That was good to know.

i looked at the taco's flares, they look really close, or the same as the limiteds (2000 taco)
i might have to find someone local with a taco and see if his flaps work.
i don't have running boards anymore, so i'd rather get something clean for the front mudflap... i'm dense and don't understand how toyota doesn't have one that fits (yes i believe you, i'm just in denial lol)
the 1st gen ones don't look the best imo, plus they hang down too much imo.

You're saying the front mudflaps didn't fit? Hmm...take your rig up to the dealer and have the parts guy go out and look at it...they should be able to get em. If not, I can get my parts guy here to get em and have them shipped to you, or go through www.toyotapartsales.com
They'll fit, just gotta make sure they're the right ones.
