this piece hanging down? It looks awfully out of place just dangling there.

You can get mud guards that will make the front look better.
From JAs 4runner page: http://www.top4runners.com/ja/additions1.html
Front Splash Guards :
Whenever you take your vehicle off road there is a chance of damaging the factory running boards. It takes very little time to remove them. Sometimes I will remove them and when I do I like to install these Toyota Splashguards. They are made to fit the factory SR5 black textured flares I have on my Highlander.
Toyota part numbers:
00547-35966DF (driver side)
00547-35961PF (passenger side)
The shouldn't be that much $. The rear looks fine to me

Gavin, what year is your truck? I have the same flares and was about to remove the running boards and replace them with nerf bars (I know they suck but a lot of people that ride in my truck need them to get in and I don't need sliders.). I hope mine doesn't look like this. The piece just looks out of place.

I think they look fine how they are. I'd not even noticed on my truck til I saw this post but maybe it's because the guy I bought it from had nerf bars on it. *shrugs* Either way, I won't be messing with mine.
