All those who've mentioned roof, then hood, then bumper are absolutely right. Get reading on Firestik's website. More reading than you can shake a stick at.

For me it was a decision between functionality and form. I originally had a hood channel mount w/ good SWR readings. I can't remember what but they were good. The thing I got sick of was that obnoxious hood channel mount sticking out of my hood.

I flattened the hood channel mount (a portion of it anyways) and remounted it on the back of my bumper. I've yet to test it but i can already tell that reception and im sure transmission will be much less. However as long as I can communicate w/ the guys I'm riding with, that is enough for me. I really don't have a need to talk w/ truckers 10 miles away.
