OEM lift, 285/75/R16s....

I know this is going to sound like a newby question, but this will really help me out!!!

I want to order my panhard drop bar from SS this week, but I am also VERY close to ordering a TJM-T17 while I am ordering from Steve. I am doing the complete OEM lift thursday night, and putting 285/75/R16 Cooper discoverer STTs on a set of FZJ-80 rims. I will be using 2 top up spacers per side up front, and the rears are 19.5" springs. Will I be OK with this setup? or should I expect to need a 1" BL too.... If I am going to have to do a BL then I will not order the TJM... but if I am not going to need a BL then I will order the TJM from Steve.... Thats why I ask.... I will expect this thing to fully flex so I would rather not rub!

Darren has the exact everything I was thinking about... wow is that an amazing looking truck!!! I think he has one of the nicest 3rd gens!!! ( no offense to all other 3rd gen owners )



He is running 2.5" front and 3ish rear and 285s and it looks deadly!!!

Input please!!! TJM or 1" BL ....

aww c'mon man...get both!

YOu might rub w/o the BL.

I say get the BL and the TJM...your gonna need to take the TJM off to install the BL. So kill 2 birds with 1 stone!

the bl is cheap.
WabFab is selling 1" bl now

also the STTs run a little smaller than most tires. Get the TJM, put the lift and tires on and get the BL later if you don't have the $$ now.

You will need it though

im running about 2.5" up front and about 2.75-3" in the back, with the goodyear 285's and same wheels. dont forget some 285' are different in size than others. youll have slight rubbing in certain areas under normal on road conditions (full crank under slight compression up front) i had to trim the corner of my limited flares up front. havent taken a hammer to the pinch weld area yet though, but i think im gonna change that bolt in that area to a more flush faced one. in the rear, i rub pretty hard under full stuff. nothing major though...but its there. so...

i recently ordered a 1.5" BL from 4crawler. should deal with most of my rubbing issues, since i dont really want to cut more metal outta my fenders. 1" didnt seem enough and 2" seemed too much. also, im really entertaining the thought of ditching my 285's and going up to 305's in the near future.

id say get em both, but if the funds dont permit that, get the bling tjm, and add a bl later if need be....either way, you'll probably end up wanting both anyway..so its just a matter of which one you want more first. decisions...decisions..haha

My 305's are no taller than a 285, just wider. i have a 4Crawler 1" body lift and a TJM and the gap isn't bad at all? is that what you are worried about? the gap? I haven't rubbed since i put in the body lift a couple months ago.

not really worried about the gap...just the rubbing. i figure with a wider tire, itll rub even more up on the rear fenders, and pinch weld area in the front. itll probably still rub up front under full stuff...i really gotta grab a hammer and clearance it a bit. not really keen on cutting that area out just yet..haha.

btw, how close are your 305's to the uca's? what width & BS you running? im thinking i might need .25" spacers. im on 8" FZJ80 wheels, and the 285's are pretty close. id say under half inch.

I ran 285s with the Tundra/ OME setup with a 1" 4crawler lift with FZJ-80 wheels and had NO issues with the UCAs. Then I ran 295 Nitto Terra grapplers and had NO clearance issues either.

No wheel spacers either.

my rims have 3 and 5/8's BS and no, i don't have any issues with my uca's either. I think Bamachem was running 305 MTR's on the LC wheels and he has no spacers or rubbing.

If you drive in the snow the BL helps alot with snow packing up in the wheel wells. My tires rubbed built up snow/ice that would freeze in the wheel wells on cold days before the bodylift.

just my two cents. have fun with the mods!

i run 305/70-16 MT/R's on LX 16" wheels with 4.5" of backspacing. I do have a 1" BL. i had to beat the pinch weld flat, and until the new rear steel was on there, i rubbed on my rear bumper at a full stuff.

on a full droop the upper arm will ever-so-gently kiss the lugs on the tread, but not bad enough to do anything about it at this point. i will also rub on the frame just a tad on a full stuff on the driver side if i have the wheel all the way to the left. other than those, it's all good.

1"BL can actually be done without taking the TJM off. If you take out the turn signals and wrench through the hole. It would have been easier to do with the bumper off but can be done and may save lots of time if you have a winch and lights to deal with also.

I ended up taking off the bumper to mod the brackets to fix the gap the next day anyway.

Well... to update... I am VERY happy with my OEM lift... but I have a 6'6" height limit for the truck as my wife needs it to fit in her underground parking at work... with just the suspension lift and the 285s, it sits in about the 6'5" range..... maybe a little more.... so a 1" BL pushes me over the limit...

awesome, the truck looks great!!!! I'm really feelin' those cruiser wheels!!!! Did you re-gear when you went to 285s? and also, if you didn't, how was the power loss? Your making some fast progress too, you allready have me beat, and I've had my truck for 2+ years.

So Far I have no rubbing with the 285s.... I have not taken it out wheeling yet though... am waiting till I fix my locker and get my rock sliders...

From what I understand the truck has 4.10 gears... It was REALLY fast with 265/75s, and has suffered a little on the power side with 285... but overall it still has all the power I need from a V6 with 33s.....
