It's been a couple years but I wanted to look at my supercharged 4Runner's tune. I've gained a lot of knowledge messing with my supercharged Challenger and feel I can re-tune the 4Runner to improve maximum performance now that I've picked up a lot of experience.

I went to hook up my trusty OBDII BR-3 and it'll connect but won't continually read data. If I click on a parameter it refreshes, but it won't do it automatically. I'm using a serial to USB adapter and Windows 7.

I know this is an oldie, but any solutions? The folks seem to be out of business. If there's newer better software for this I'm all ears.

 

My BR-3 served me well for years. But I never successfully ran it on the USB/Serial converter. So I had to can it after I no longer had a serial port in my life. I switched to Torque Pro with an OBDII Bluetooth adapter. I don't miss the BR-3 at all. It's $15 for Torque Pro, $20 or so for the adapter, but you need an Android phone.

 

I also use a Bluetooth adapter, however I use my iPhone and an app called Engine Link. I use it to monitor different sensors, including transmission temp.

In my opinion, using an app on your phone like Torque Pro or Engine Link and a Bluetooth adapter is the way to go.

Honestly it is not worth messing with it if you are having issues. It is most likely the Adapter cable, took for a long time to find one that worked.

It costs almost the same to just get a bluetooth OBDII reading though so thats what I recommend. They are SO much nicer anyways, no more running cables all over the place and you can use your phone to log things anytime.

Amazon sells one for about $25 that works great. Just make sure it is the one with good reviews and sold by amazon themselves.

Seeing it on the phone and other devices is a cool feature, but to do what I'm trying to do (tune) I need it to connect to my laptop. I've found I can connect my 7th injector piggy back, launch R4 tuning software, connect the LC-1, launch log works, and finally whatever OBDII software I have and record what's on the computer screen with CAM Studio. This gives me a real time data log and I know which cells in R4 to manipulate.

I retuned the WOT fueling on the 4Runner today and have it dead nuts at 11.4 - 11.8 throughout the rev range. I guess the summer blend fuel makes the AFR rich as it had been running 10.3 - 10.8 and the truck really felt sluggish. Now it's EXTREMELY peppy and feel fantastic and smooth strong power delivery.

I need the OBDII stuff to tweak the fuel trims and timing. Looks like I'll have to wait on that for this new device.
