Coolant Temperature Sensor.
After reading what all you guys have said, I ordered a new coolant temperature sensor today. I believe that is my problem too. My transmission works great other than it's erratic shifting in & out of overdrive. Sometimes when you are going 55 or 6o it will downshift into 3rd gear when you didn't mash the pedal anymore, I have racked my brain on this onebut, I think ya'll have me going in the right direction. I am gonna go ahead & pull the thermostat & blow through the tube while I have the sensor out. Thank's a million, I'll keep you posted. Mike

David,
I've decided to do it my self. It sounds easy enough...
Do you know if I can just take my temperature sensor out, take my thermostat out, and just blow in the hole where the sensor is supposed to be with a thermostat housing open? Then, I think, it should clear the whole system at once...
I'm also thinking about changing the fan (I have '88 Supra fan now) back to original, and change the temperature sensor (I have the one from AutoZone) back to the original also...
What do you think?
Thanks

I think you can do it yourself. The hard part will be getting to the temp sensor.....it is hard to reach being on the back top of the motor block but underneath the intake manifold and right up against the firewall. I personally don't think you need to change the Supra fan......more cooling is actually better and more desirable. Your problem is with the temp sensor not seeing hot coolant.....once you sort out that problem and hot fluid flows over the sensor consistently, how the fan runs and what type of fan is a non-issue. If I were you....keep the Supra fan in because it is giving you more HP and with the 3.0L you want more power. Just clean out all of the crap/trash in you system (I still was finding black gasket material floating in my coolant 3 years after I had the probelm fixed and several coolant flushes later......the radiator traps the trash and flushes don't get rid of it all). Going back to a Toyota OEM sensor is always advisable but I don't think that is really the root of your problem....I think it is trash preventing coolant from getting to the sensor.
Good luck and let us know how it works out.
