So finally some progress.

Ive been wrapped up in work for a while, but after the incident in Japan i decided to go grab my import just in case things got complicated.



Also ordered are

Timing Belt
Idler Roller
Tensioner Roller
Crank/Cam Seals
Water Pump
Tstat
Serpentine Belts

Im tracking down some engine stands and then ill pull the old motor, swap the old intake/pan/electrical onto the new block along with replacing the list above. atleast ive got the ball rolling now

Great find! I ran into a similar situation on a 96 Limited, PO didn't want to put $7500 in it with a stealership engine so he took the money and bought an Armada and posted it for $500. It was luck I found it at the right time and put $300 down and came back that night with the $200 and had it towed to a shop that specialized in swaps. Can you believe that people were still low balling him even at $500! Seriously.
Anyway, I have had it for nearly 4 years now and have upgraded parts, lifted it and drove it all over the place. I freaking love it and think you're doing the right thing putting it back on the road. I only wish mine had the diff lock and X2 on the rear axle seal leak. I had to replace mine too, started seeing fluid all over rim and tire. Probably that and not the wheel cylinder, smell the fluid first but you sound pretty mechanically inclined so I'm sure you know what it needs. Good luck bro!!

 

Wish I could find a deal like this. Swap the axel into my truck and then have a place to put my 3.4 when I finally put an LS motor in my 4runner and pay for my LS swap + everything else.

Got it up on the stand (thanks Vitaly) and popped the valve cover off, super clean! Got all my pulleys/belts today as well. Currently pulling off all the wires and hoses so it will be ready to swap over when i pull the blown motor.

The PO used a ton of BARS stopleak before the engine blew and its completely clogged the radiator, so Ill be replacing that. Is there any way to tell what it may have done to my heater core or do i just need to wait and see?

i would just replace the heater core now. you dont want there to be that motor killing stop leak in it and have it get all through your cooling system and motor again. youre swapping the motor do the extra amount of work so you dont have to do it twice, trust me i know...

 

flush and backflush that heater core. Get as much out before you try hooking up the cooling system. let me know if you want the pulley holder...

 

Got a bit more done today. There was still gas in the rails, looks like it hasn't been out of commission for too long.

Ill probably have the injectors cleaned by WitchHunter sometime this week.

 

second just flush it and back flush. if u feel like the flow is not very good coming out of the heater core then pull and replace,

 

I have a guy who cleans injectors for usually 20 a piece. Injectorlab. Let me know.

 

Thanks to Vitaly again i was able to get the crank bolt off and get to the stuff behind it. At this point im officially done removing things from this one. Next step is to buff all the mating surfaces and install the new pulleys/wp/tbelt/tensioner and get it all sealed up to drop in.



A bit of concern about the idler pulley i got with my kit. Everything is OEM brand but this pulley seems to be a bit shorter than the other. The original was NSK and this is Koyo. The pulleys are the same width and the belt is still a bit smaller than the length of the pulley, does this pose a problem?

 

As if i didnt see this coming, the #2 idler pulley in the kit is too small. Got the WP/belt on today only to find there is a couple MM of belt sticking out from the pulley. I just shot off an email to the guy i bought these from, so im waiting to see what he has to say.

I would say its a problem. The timing belt should be contacting all the way accross the pulley. Hey if you need to get one. Let me know and I can get you my cost at the dealer.

 

It finally stopped raining long enough for me to tear into the 4Runner while im waiting for the right pulley to get the new motor set.

Im deviating from my original plan of pulling the motor then stripping everything off of it and doing the opposite. I wasn't thinking when i moved it out back into rocks, and well, the engine hoist doesn't do well in rocks. Ill strip it to the longblock or less to make it easier to deal with.

Really busy with work/finals lately but managed to get some stuff done.

Ended up getting the right idler pulley sent to me and had to do the t-belt again. Now its all buttoned up, just waiting to pull the blown motor so i can swap over the oil cooler and exhaust manifolds.

Got the valve covers and intake manifold back from hottanking, cleaned it up nicely but couldn't get rid of the pitting.



Clean one on the right, dirty on the left. notice the tranny cooler in the background, hooray.
